Beginner gym tips?

Hi everyone
I have recently opened a gym membership. It's at one of those basic 24 hour ones in the hope I squeeze in some workouts. My goal is to lose a stone and also to get stronger. Can anyone explain in basic terms what sort of gym work I should do. I can't do much lower body at present due to a running injury. Thanks!
