Anyone tried Orange Theory Fitness?

I went to a trial class last night...apparently they try to get your heart working at certain paces and you end up burning more calories over the next few hours even after the class is over. I think it's actually really motivating - I stayed on the treadmill longer than I normally would do because of the teacher yelling above the loud music!

All cardio exercise causes a person to burn calories even after the exercise is over, up to 24 hours, in fact.

You could do that with weight lifting.

They opened a location in Pittsburgh earlier this year. I spoke with them for the "founding" memberships. I think if I didn't do a lot of running, I would join. A coworker joined and she does like it, but she doesn't understand people who don't purchase their own heart monitor from OT and just use the one that other folks have used ie very sweaty. LOL

I've never tried OTF, but I've been to fitness camps with similar interval style classes and I love them. I work so much harder in a group setting; I don't know if it's just the camaraderie or some innate competitiveness, but for me, group classes are super motivating.

I looked into Orange Theory, but it just seemed way too expensive. I'd definitely go if it were more affordable.

It's an intriguing idea: the running heart rate "scoreboard" that doesn't let you cheat, but it looks pretty pricey. I quick Google search says $59/mo for four classes, $99/mo for eight and $159/mo for unlimited classes.

I have friends that go to the one in Santa Monica and love it...they like the scoreboard idea and I think the motivation is good for them. To me, its a really expensive exercise class I could probably do on my own.

I was working with a personal trainer four hours a week for about 14 months so I decided to add orange theory as it seem like a cheaper option. And then cut back my personal trainer to twice a week.
    I went for two months....

My thoughts on it are this:
they definitely focus on getting your heart rate up. Which is good.

HOWEVER, the strength training component of it is actually done so fast that a person can and will actually INJURE themselves because they don't really focus on the form. They show you how to do things ONCE. I saw MANY people having incorrect form and they were not being corrected. So as far as I'm concerned the 25 minutes that you spend on the "strength training floor" is far below adequate.

The nice thing about it is that you're in a class with a bunch of other people doing the exact same thing
And if you need/want that for motivation--- that's great

But you spend the money on the classes and if you don't use it you're really wasting your money so that's a good motivation to just Buy your own heart rate monitor.

Try it out and see how you like it for yourself. Just be really careful on the floor/strength portion of the workout.

Yeah I went back to using my personal trainer until December so another five months and I ended up getting a "frozen shoulder"..... 8 months later and it's finally starting to get some more movement

I'm really really glad that orange theory is working for you ! that's awesome!

Never tried it but I read an article on it yesterday and how great it is. Sounded really fun, but there's no locations convenient to me so I'll stick to my Boot Camp classes for now.
