I wear them as I have arthritis in my thumbs and left wrist (and feet). I wear mine over my lifting gloves, and I have no idea if anyone has given me funny looks - I don't pay any attention. I want to lift and they make it a lot more comfortable and less painful for me as well as giving me the security of more joint stability. Just wear them - if people are looking, after the first few trips to the gym, they won't even notice. Now the guy in the blue flowery headscarf in the lifting area at my gym - he looks funny, but he is lifting huge amounts of weight so I'm not going to laugh! Good luck and do what you have the right to do :).
