Depo-provera

Hi,
I just got a Depo-provera injection today and after reading about possible side effects, I am a bit worried.
I asked questions before getting the injection (they said there isn't much negative side effects besides lower calcium levels -- which I can solve/prevent by eating dairy or taking a supplement).

Has anyone else tried Depo-provera? How did it effect you and did it change your appetite?
Other possible symptoms include mood changes, nausea, acne and headaches.

I know not everyone experiences all the symptoms possible but I am hoping I don't regret taking the injection. I'm mainly concerned that the birth control will conflict with my weight loss goals and I want to do whatever possible to prevent that. From what I read, it doesn't change the metabolism -- just appetite levels.

Now you are aware of hunger cues, they may be misleading. Log your food intake accurately and you will be fine.

have fallen victim to a weight gain in the last six months I have been on it and I have been using depo since June 2014. The gain has been about 10 lbs. I have just started the Keto diet in hopes to lose the weight.

I've had the injection the entire time and have had no problems losing weight.
When people claim to have gained weight on depo, they are not actually gaining weight from thin air . they have increased hunger , thus causing them to eat in a surplus, then they gain weight . but its easier to blame a medicine rather then admit they have eaten in a surplus because of increased hunger
Learn your body, learn when your really hungry. Weigh all your foods, log them properly and don't eat at a surplus and then you won't gain weight . ( besides water weight fluctuations)
So don't worry, listen to your body and understand that you need to eat at a surplus to gain weight .

I have been on depo for 7 years now. It hasnt stopped me from losing weight. If I stop taking it it won't be due to weight issues. Waiting for a bone scan appointment to come through

I was on it for two years and never had a problem. I don't know if your doctor put you on a time limit to be on it, but mine said at two years I would be cut off because depo can leech calcium from your bones over time. I was sad to let it go because I loved it.

The calcium loss is real. I just had my scan and was diagnosed with osteopenia. The doctor told me two years then get off of it. Yes, I drank a lot of milk, always have.

One benefit is that you don't have the hormonal highs and lows that cause cravings.

I honestly ditched that doctor because I did not get anymore help. He was well now you have it let's move on. I did most of my searching for help. Exercise, like walking, watch the food intake, make sure you are getting enough calcium and vit D.

Thanks. Vitamin d I am on a course at the moment so will sort out the calcium. Exercising in hand.

I used it, gained 12 pounds. Switched doctors and told her I was on depo and she said she doesn't prescribe it to patients anymore due to weight gain. I'm on the pill, have lost 30+ since.
Of course everyone is different. You might be fine!
  • When I was on it, I never felt full until I was stuffed, think thanksgiving day stuffed. So, it wasn't that I felt hungry all the time, it was that when I ate, I never got the que that told me it was time to stop, thusly I overate, because I really wasn't paying attention to the amount of food I was consuming.

I got very hungry (and gained weight, yeah), but it was the unexpected and unpredictable spotting so often that really aggravated me. I hated that shot :( Take some supplies in your purse just in case.

I'm on progesterone now (bio-identical Prometrium), but it doesn't work for birth control. It agrees with me and helps my endometriosis very much, but that BC shot did not agree with me. I have hormonal imbalances, though, so hopefully your experience will be very different!
