Net Calorie Burn- Running vs Walking

Found this calculation for determining the net calorie burn of walking vs. running one mile. Thought I'd share:

Running: for each mile multiply .63 x your weight
Walking: for each mile multiply .3 x your weight

This is from Runner's World http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning?page=1

It isn't going to be exact - if you are a seasoned runner your body is much more efficient and you probably won't burn as much, but it is better than using the MFP exercise calculators which give you a total calorie burn.

I calculate it for myself and it is close to what my HRM and most of the online charts tell me so I would consder it within 10-15 percent.

I use the formulas that RW offers as a way of sanity checking my HRM and they're usually quite close.

The formula for walking, however (and I think they mention this in the article) doesn't work for race walking where participants may actually experience caloric burns equal to or higher than running.
