does 1 sandwich mean 2 slices of bread or 1 slice cut in half?

Are you looking at an entry in the database? You're much better to add the ingredients individually that rely on a pre-entered thing. If it's a pre-makde one though, 1 sandwich would be the whole thing, 2 slices of bread.0

If it was one slice cut in half with filling in between the two halves, that would be one half sandwich.
Ditto what Alatariel75 said. Don't use "sandwich" out of the database unless it's a specific pre-made sandwich.
Also, make sure to read the label to see how many servings per container. For instance, Raybern's sandwiches, while awesome, are 2 servings per sandwich. On what planet is a half of a sandwich ever a serving size!?0
