knees

So, let's just say I let myself get overweight to a point it started affecting my joints... At 27. I don't think I have arthritis and I'm sure it can be reversed by weight loss, but did anyone have knee troubles because of weight? Did it get better? I can't stand lunges because of the awkward feeling it puts in my knees. Do I push through it and just do what I can do and gradually push it? I'm sure I'm being overly freaked out but I really hope it's not a permanent thing.

You DON'T have to do lunges if you feel you can't do them. There lots of leg exercises you can do.

I'd go slowly with your knees. I have iffy knees but have been able to exercise for decades by just stopping or lessening the exercise if my knees are painful.

As you lose weight and get stronger the leg muscles will help support your knees.

I use my treadmill. I do 60 minutes 6 days a week. My knees are bad due to weight and arthritis. Which was brought from excessive weight. But it feeling better after 21pound weight loss. Plus exercising makes it feel better. Good luck on your journey to healthy life.

Please, please consider getting it diagnosed. Some knee problems resolve with weight loss. Some require other strategies: Physical therapy, strength building, stretching/foam rolling, etc. Some problems are relatively easily remedied, but some have the potential to be made worse (perhaps *much* worse) by doing the wrong thing in the wrong way or at the wrong time. Since you're only 27, I hope yours will be something you can resolve with weight loss and strength/stretching. It's best to know what you're dealing with, rather than hope or guess.

I'm 59, have had sub-ideal knees for decades. I now have a torn meniscus (that I probably could've avoided or delayed by earlier weight loss and better health practices) and some arthritis. Weight loss has definitely reduced discomfort. Physical therapy also helped - not because it can treat a torn meniscus (it can't), but because I learned how to walk, climb stairs, etc., in ways that reduced the stress on my knees. Stretching, foam rolling (and other massage techniques), and icing after workouts have all been helpful. (Quadriceps strengthening helps many people, too, but I already have strong quads from rowing.)

I'd switch to a lower impact routine. I have bad knees due to weight, and flat feet. It's not worth hurting yourself over!

Thanks for the advice guys! When I do my routine on my own I'm fine. It's just those darn group classes love lunes of all sorts! I'd go to the doctor but no health insurance so that's a no go.

Well do an alternative move like knee up arms up or an leg step forward which is a ver light lunge if you can bend the knee. Look up alternative movements they are truly knee saving. Don't do any exercise if it feels like it is uncomfortable or hurts. Stop immediately. Avoid injury.

In group exercise classes the instructor should give you alternatives if there is an exercise you can't do. I have hypermobility syndrome and my knees are not yet strong enough to safely lunge so I just substitute squats. You definitely should check it out with a medic but weight loss and strengthening exercises for the muscles which surround the joints should help. Keep trying but I would advise against pushing to do something you find painful - just skip lunges and do low impact exercise until you are more comfortable.
