Actually, diet sodas do have calories... it's just a pretty small amount to pass as "zero calorie". If I'm not mistaken, diet mtn dew has around 10 calories per 600ml.
There is no sugar. Instead, a sweetner like aspartame is used instead.

Diet soda is carbonated water. Water has never in the history of water had calories. Carbonation doesn't add calories.
The soda syrup mixed with the carbonated water to make soda is made with real and artificial ingredients, especially no sugar to come in at the USDA requirements for no calories. The flavoring ingredients make up such a small percentage of the syrup they are negligible. In regular soda, all the calories are from sugar substitutes like high fructose corn syrup.0 -
