Recovery food - when is it too late?

On occasion if I feel bloated or just exercise too late in the day I fall flat on eating and end up with a larger calorie deficit than I intend. Wednesday is a great example, and I fell almost 40g short on protein. Poor intake planning on my part and I understand that. But I was WAY too full to eat even a protein bar or smoothie.
So my question is.... does trying to fulfill that void by eating more the next morning help with recovery as far as the body goes? I know it kills any lingering hunger, but as far as actual body/muscle recovery, is the damage already done?
