What difference is there, if any, between a candy bar and your average "energy" bar?

Read your ingredients carefully! I love the convenience, but want at least 5 grams of protein and no more than 6 or 7 grams sugar. There's a lot of variation between brands. ~sighs~
BTW: old time back country cross country skiers swear by a snickers bar in the back pocket on long routes! I love 'em but the sugars are still too damn high so I carry a kashi bar...

I pick and choose which protein bars I eat based on nutritional facts. I don't eat candy bars, but if I did, I'd go for a Snickers or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups over things like Starburst or Skittles based on the nutritional facts. Since protein isn't a priority for you, you should just eat what you're craving instead of what you think you're supposed to eat. Certain foods may have similar nutrition profiles in certain aspects but that doesn't mean that they're equivalent.

Right, I agree. I didn't eat an energy bar because I thought it was good for me, I ate it because it was on hand. I've already lost 8lbs eating hot pockets for lunch every day for the last month, so I definitely get the "eat what you want" thing.

Oh, sorry! I know that when I got into fitness and nutrition that I used to read a lot of stuff online and I'd read about how x, y, or z was bad for you and avoid this food or that food. Before I knew better, I used to believe the hype. I assumed that you were in a similar situation so I apologize. Out of curiosity, do you remember the brand of energy bar you ate? There are certain brands I love, but I'm not a fan of Clif, Luna, Builder's, or Zone Perfect.

Also, I haven't had Hot Pockets in forever, but I know they're branded as bad for you and "college kid food" by so many people. I'm pretty sure I ate a BBQ Chicken Hot Pocket every day in college and I stayed 111 pounds hahaha. Good luck on your weight loss journey!

Yeah, the bar I ate earlier is this one:

Not really great for nutrition, so I was just kind of surprised they call it that. Seems like you can slap the label "energy" or "organic" on just about anything these days.

Most of them have protein powder mixed in. Some people like to eat protein powder, so putting it in a candy bar is a tasty way to get it.

You're better off eating whole foods. Even the people who make the Quest bars will tell you that. But if you like them or want something with protein powder to throw in you're purse or whatever, eat them. :)

I like to pair my daily chocolate with protein and fiber, washing it down with an ice cold glass of skim milk, as a treat. Today I just had chocolate ice cream. Second time I have had a full serving of ice cream in the last 6 months. Ice cream has less protein, no fiber, and more fat so if I wasn't worried about hitting my fiber goal, while staying in a calorie deficit, I could chose the ice cream more often. Life is all about choices and fitness/health is all about goals.

There's nothing wrong with eating a bar if you're in the mood to do so. Maybe he already had turkey with cheese that day or maybe he doesn't even like turkey with cheese.

One of the good things about being my current size is that my calorie deficit still leaves me enough room to eat a candy bar if I want to. I usually opt not to, but some days...the butterfinger calls.

    Almost nothing

I often stop At the gas station and get a cup of bold coffee and a snickers 250 calories before taking off with friends on a bike ride

For that activity it is perfect

I will take one for the trail if they are 2/1.09$

For weight lifting I like a more protein oriented snack. But still, a Snickers isn't bad

It is fuel to use at the moment.

    It isn't my lunch

    Your mileage may vary.

Well they're not wrong that sugar will give you "energy", because it will, it'll give you a boost. Misleading, yes, I think so. If you want to bump your protein, check the label for sure. The ones I've seen that give an ok protein to calorie ratio are all like PROTEIN! PROTEIN! THIS THING HAS A LOT OF PROTEIN IN IT! CHECK OUT ALL THE PROTEIN IN THIS BAR in their branding too (usually in caps like that)

I prefer the extra protein but bars are typically too much for a snack. I get better control if I cut the bar in half and split it up in the morning and afternoon. The macro balance is handy.

Sugar is sugar, its a source of energy, it converts to fat, that said CICO.

I imagine those labels help them sell more

I did the quest bar thing for a little bit but wound up gobbling them all up (bought a box of 20), so that's a no go. It was nice to buy one on a recent trip to the mall, though. It came in handy for lunch

So I don't do protein or energy bars, but I do occasionally have a Payday. For energy prior to a workout at the end of the day, I sip on diet dew during my drive to the gym. If I need a little pick me up during or after my workout, I use sliced apples packed in a sandwich bag
