My journey.....the good, the bad and the fried.

Ok so full disclosure I have been chubby my whole life. Only until recently had I gotten overweight. I got married and got lazy and comfortable (cue all the clichés in the book). It wasn't until my husband and I took a couples trip and I looked at the pictures did I realize how big I had gotten.
We went out to dinner for our 1 year anniversary and the next day I began my new "healthy" life. It's been about 4 months now and I've lost roughly 27LBs with 18LBs more to go. I've gotten really into the clean eating and making stuff from scratch. I still do have some processed stuff and aren't always 100% good but breaking 20+ years of bad eating isn't easy.
My husband is coming around to trying new things which is HUGE. He grew up in a household where everything was canned, frozen, processed and the farthest thing from actual food (not discounting any of the above just giving background). He recently tried the organic hot dogs I bought from Wholefoods and fell in LOVE.
I recently have hit the dreaded weight plateau. It's now my third week of not losing anything. I haven't been super horrible but admit to have a few set backs. I am trying to keep my mental game up and keep going but it is rough. I can see where people fall back into the easy grab and eat mentality.
I would love to start a open and honest dialog between users. This isn't a quick "I want to fit into this dress" or "I want to be skinny" type of journey. This is I want to be healthy and do whatever I want (physically).
Anyone else out there??
Also, a shameless plug but I have also been starting to write about my journey on Tumblr. Feel free to come take a look and pass along!!! allthatschmidt.tumblr.com/

Great job on the weight loss. I have a very similar story and today is the "this is it" day! Same situation, I have been taking martial arts for several year, getting ready to test to my black belt in the next few months. Looking at the pics from my last test, and I was like... who is that person in the picture... that surely is not me!
I also have similar situations, where my husband only at processed foods and the only fruit that they ever had growing up were apples. He did not realize that asparagus can be bought is something other than a can... (not that he would have ever eaten that before...) So having him try new foods is usually a challenge, although he is actually getting better and starting to trust me and my cooking.
As far as the plateau, I would suggest to start from scratch. Double check your portion sizes and change your work out. Don't forget that not all weight loss is noted on the scale. The changing of 5 pounds of fat to 5 pounds of muscle does not change the scale, but you will be smaller. so be sure to take you measurements and not just relying on the scale.
Have a wonderful day!

Thank you! Yes, my husband is exactly the same! I have tried to get better at cooking so it's hit or miss but mostly I've zero'd in on what he will eat. Surprisingly asparagus is one of his favs....me? Not so much!
Great advise on the plateau. I've started weighing portions more and tried pushing myself in my workouts. I usually went for a "hard" walk and recently started to add sprinting. Now with the little bit of extra weight off it's not as hard on my knees. I also am getting into a regular yoga rotation which I LOVE. Helps my body and my mind--can't beat that!
I wish I would have started the measurements originally so I could see it from beginning to end but I'm using pant sizes to estimate. Even though they are all different by brand I can get a good average.
Thanks for writing back and I wish you lots of luck on your journey!0 -
When I hit a plateau last month for two weeks I stayed at my calorie count of 1100 and was pretty miserable. I'd gain a couple, lose a couple, gain a couple, lose a couple. At that point I stopped drinking wine at night even though it was within my calorie count, I started to lose a little. I think that I might have not counted all of the calories of either the food I ate when drinking, or the wine itself. Then I increased my calories to 1200 and have lost 4# this month. So, look at your alcohol, look at your calories when you drink (food and beverage), and don't have such a low calorie count that you're trying to lose too much and end up eating more food because you're hungry. Hang in there, because in the end, calories in calories out will win the day and you'll start losing again.0

When you are at the point where you are a little closer to your goal like within 20 lbs or so, it goes much slower. Don't be discouraged, just keep doing what you're doing. You will have to be patient and work a little harder for the last few lbs. That's where I am.0

You are totally right with the alcohol. I weigh my wine (and account for the glass) but I think what I've read is true about is slowing down the digestion. If I have a glass I try to do it after dinner versus during. I am at 1200 calories a day and usually stay pretty close to it. I've started to keep closer track and "eye ball" I find when I have success I tend to drift.
I actually didn't realize how I really hadn't ben focusing on my veggies until I hit my plateau so I've made more of an effort and I think it'll help.I've started more on my salad kick again and when I'm hungry and at my calorie goal I eat good foods. I read a statements once that said something along the lines of "no one got fat from eating carrots or an apple when they were hungry" Its hard to retrain that now I know when I'm truly hungry and when I just want food.
Weigh in is on Monday so we will see. I purposely chose Mondays so that I didn't have an excuse to be "bad" on the weekend. I've found when I weighed in on Friday then the weekend just went down the drain. Even when I splurge on a Monday or Tuesday it's not even a quarter as bad.
Thanks again for all the feedback and support!0
