chest 'pop' whilst doing weighted bench dips!!

So I was doing weighted bench dips yesterday and I could feel the pressure on my chest on the last 3-4 reps but I kept on going and on the last rep I felt my chest pop almost as if someone had punched me on the inside. I immediately stopped but since then it has really been hurting me its like a sharp pain right in the middle of my chest. When I breathe it slightly pains me but it hurts the most when I try and change my top or take off my clothes.
I was in the gym this morning and I could barely work my shoulders as it was just hurting my chest like crazy. I tried to switch and do legs instead but even the leg press hurt a little bit.

Has this happened to anyone before ? How long did it take to feel better and what did u do for treatment ? I will be on holiday 7 days in Malta from Saturday so I will be resting it for a good while. I'm just hoping I haven't injured myself badly..

Do you see any red/purple marks on your chest? Sounds to me like you pulled the muscle in your chest. If you had torn it you would be all purple and looking rad.

You over did it buddy, enjoy your week off and next time take it easy when doing dips. Remember Form > Weight.

  • Its also possible that you sprained/strained the joint between rib and sternum. Your breastbone is connected to your upper ribs via cartilaginous supports.

Sometimes if I lean back really far, I get a pop or crack from these, similar to cracking knuckles. It's not painful as you describe, but it's possible that you overextended that floating joint. Rest. Ice if it swells. See a doctor if it persists.
