I love summer, and i love sangria. and as a spaniard, i take it quite seriously. First off, do not buy the already made sangria. too sweet in my opinion. buy the carlo rossi box wine. i prefer the box over the glass jug because it's usually easier to cram in the fridge, and easier to pour out. Burgundy is my favorite, as it is not too bold or sweet, and no bite like the cabernet can be. However, the rule of cooking with wine goes the same as with making sangria: if you won't drink it, don't use it.
my secret ingredient is sunkist. it adds a great orange taste and fizziness, and a good amount of sweetness. if you don't want to use flavored soda, but still want some fizz, regular club soda or seltzer is fine. i've also used ginger ale. i'll add some equal or other artifical sweetner, but you can add sugar too, all depending on tase.
my dad will tell you to use a shot or two of brandy, but don't go and buy some VSOP remy martin or anything. one little no name bottle that is usually behind the cashier is fine. i've also used bourbon, jameson, and jack daniels in a pinch.
Fruit is done to taste. i'll usually slice up an apple or two and throw that in there. personally, i don't like to chew my wine, so the fruit usually doesn't go into my cup. take a lemon and slice it in have and squeeze the juice into the pictcher... do the same with an orange if you didn't use sunkist. throw the rinds in to the pitcher. i've used limes this way too. I've also added grapes, and sliced up strawberries for the people that like to eat the fruit.
lastly, i add the wine, to help it all mix together.

Sangria = alcoholic fruit salad.
My recipe:
1bottle strong red wine
1can diet ginger ale
2-6shots Cointreau (or triple sec) depending on how strong you want it
2-3 kinds of thin sliced fruit (optional)0 -
alcoholic fruit salad. i love it.
also, i forgot about adding the triple sec.0 -
I made sangria last month. I wasn't sure what kind of wine to use, so at the suggestion of the store manager, I bought a Spanish wine (I forget what region the wine was from). It had a bite when I sipped it alone, but after it all came together it was okay. Next time I'll try a burgundy as you suggest. Thanks for sharing!
Here's the recipe I used:
Sangria
2 cups Wine
1 cup Ginger Ale
1 cup Orange Juice
2 oz Triple Sec
2 oz Brandy
Slice an orange in half, cut into slices and slip in (I also added sliced strawberries and peaches)
Add a dash of cinnamon (I didn't add the cinnamon)0 -
From a bartender's perspective, OP seems to have a pretty yummy recipe. I'm loving the orange soda idea. :flowerforyou:
Dont forget you can make a white wine sangria also, for those that like it "lighter."
