What's the etiquette for friend requests?

Whenever I send a friend request I try to always include a short message to give the other person some context as to why I'm requesting them.
About half the friend requests that are sent to me don't have a message.
What's the etiquette for that? Is it the norm not to include a message? Is it rude to start declining all the ones without a message?

Good question. I usually send a short note as well.0

I'm only here a few months, so I'm probably not the best to advise, but - if it's someone that you've interacted with via a conversation in a thread (like this), then maybe it's OK to send one without a message, but if it's someone I haven't had any form of actual dialogue with, then a message really should accompany the request.
just my $.02.

If you would like a message to accompany a friend request just make it known on your profile.0

Totally agree that if we are interacting on a thread, then a message isn't really necessary. But the random ones... Some context would be nice.
Profiles are only visible via the website, right? I'm not able to see them via the iPhone app.0 -
I always send a note. I wish everyone did.
I don't always recall who I've interacted with on the forums, so if I've interacted with someone in a thread, I bring their attention to that.0 -
I usually send a note, too. I sometimes don't include a note on the "add me" threads, since the OP was specifically asking for folks to send them FRs.
Agree with tiptoe about including a message on your profile, there are many profiles that state that FRs without a note will be declined.0 -
I'm not fussed if it has a message or not. 90% of the members here are on this for the same reason as me which is to lose weight. If anyone sends me a friend request I'll accept. No point in ignoring because they didn't leave a message. I dont send messages but I'll support anyone who I'm friends with0

I probably turn down at least half of the FR I get. My profile (which you have to go to in order to send a FR) clearly states that if you don't include a message, AND have a blank/blocked profile, I almost certainly decline your FR. I don't understand what's so hard about writing a sentence.
If someone piques my interest, I'll peruse their profile, then if I like what I see, I'll send a FR with a message. I get turned down plenty of times; I'm not everyone's cup of tea.0 -
I don't think there is an etiquette, it's all up to personal choice. I'm not bothered either way, I just don't like it when people add you then never talk to you, but maybe i've done that to others, lol.0

I deny 99% of requests because they have blank profiles, dont include a message or even a hello , so I have no idea if they are a good match for me.
Whenever I send one, I include a brief note and make sure my profile is visible to them so they can see I'm not a weirdo .0 -
A note is always preferred, at least for me.0

I agree a brief note with request0

I have never turned down a FR based on whether or not there is a note. I have however turned down a couple that did include a note because they came across as creepy guys looking to pick up chicks. I don't send many requests but I do always include a note when I do. I think it is nice to get a little context as to why the person wants to be friends.0

I have a note in my profile asking that people send a message with friend requests. I now delete any sent without notes since I can only assume they are illiterate. All of our interaction would be through written word so it doesn't make sense for me to friend anybody on MFP who can't read.0

Sadly, the notes in our profiles don't show up for someone using the app. With more and more people coming to the boards that way, it would be nice if the powers that be could fix that.0 -
At first I sent a little something with each friend request, but I noticed that all the requests I got had nothing. So I started sending nothing. If someone's profile stated they required something I wouldn't know since I only use the app.0

I only use the mfp app so nothing shows up about a message included if your sending a request.0
-
I always send a note. By doing that, it's saying "You're worth my time to spend 10 second to write a note"0

I use the MFP iOS app on an Apple iPhone 5s. If there's a message included with the request, I am able to see and read it. I'll send you one, see if you can see it??

It's a pain to write messages on the iphone, so for that reason I don't usually include a note unless person has asked for it. I get very few requests that include a note. It's just not a big deal. If someone turns out to be a spammer, I delete them. This only happened once. If they post annoying things or stuff I don't like reading, I delete them. That's only happened a couple of times. It's that simple.0
