Working out after little sleep. Advice please?

I have a job that requires me to stay overnight about once a week and I get very little sleep that night. When I get off in the morning would I be better off going straight to the gym and knocking the workout out of the way and then going home to nap, or would the opposite be better? Also any advice to make the workout as painless as possible and keep the energy up?

Please feel free to add me :)

If you have the time, and will really get up and do it, go for the nap first. Your body and mind will function much better after the nap.

I don't think we can answer that definitively because we don't know how you feel. I couldn't work out with very little sleep though.

I work third shift five nights a week, so I really struggled with this. I normally get about 5-6 hours of sleep a day, which works for me. I nap before work so that helps. Anyways, I eat two eggs before I go to sleep. I know people have said not to eat before bed, but I run 3-5 miles when I wake up and this helps. Plus, weight really started to fall off once I started this. Once, I wake up I have a regular sized coffee and off I go. I really truly believe for me that nutrition the day before helps so much for the workout that is to come. Also, if I eat the eggs or sometimes a couple pieces of toast with peanut butter (just enough) and honey before bed my workout is amazing.

I do two 12hr night shifts per week and absolutely get terrible workouts if I try to do it post work before I nap first. Terrible energy. I use one of those days as my rest day and the other I workout in the afternoon after I've slept. But I say trial and error..see what works for you.

I work crazy days often, sometimes 2 jobs equaling 16 hrs . I definitely must go home and sleep before the gym.
