Has anyone seen success from riding a bike as excercise? My hubby says it's not really going to make any difference as far as weight loss goes but I argued it would because you're still burning cals. Yes?

Like with any exercise, it will be dependent on what you're calorie intake is.

If you're in a calorie deficit, you'll lose weight. You can create the deficit through your eating alone, by exercising, or a combination of both.

Regardless, it's a great cardiovascular exercise and quite fun. :)

I go on a 15 - 20 mile bike ride two to three times a week and each ride burns around 1200 calories, so yea I'd say it makes a difference for sure.

Of course biking counts as exercise and of course it burns calories. The calories burned from exercise count toward the "calories out" part of the equation. I get huge calorie burns when I can get out for long weekend rides.

But you don't exercise in isolation. You have to keep your diet in control, because it is very easy to eat all that you exercise and more. Perhaps that's what your husband meant?

Cycling is my main sport/exercise ... and I have definitely "seen results".

When I was my fittest, in 2003, I was slender, muscular, and cycling huge distances. Hoping to get back to that again ... getting close!

Wow!!! What a great question. I have lost 82 lbs. since I started trying to lose weight. Most of the weight I've lost this year. I ride between 60-100 miles per week, although with the weather colder and the sun setting earlier, that will be more of a challenge. I just did my first Century ride last weekend, which was a fitness goal of mine. Cycling is great exercise!! The key is to go long distances and work up your speed so you are working hard. I burn over 1500 calories when I ride. Saturday's ride was over 5,000 calories (I use MapMyRide). I also lift weights and watch my nutrition very carefully, so there is a balance. I wrote about my ride here: http://traceyfit.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-girl-picked-last.html

it took me a while to figure this out, but here's the bottom line:

if your sole goal and heart's desire is to lose weight, then exercise isn't necessary. you can do that solely by eating next to nothing for extended periods of time. and, as you've already seen, people line up to point that out to you whenever a question like this comes up.

if you wish to speed your results along, you can magnify your caloric deficit by engaging in exercise to burn off calories that you wouldn't have burned off by not exercising. in my mind, a calorie burned is a calorie that doesn't get to take up residence in your excess body weight.

you'll also find it easier to get out of bed, easier to walk a flight of stairs, easier to play with your kids without getting winded, and you'll realize a wealth of benefits that you'll only receive via exercise.

is exercise necessary to lose weight? no.

are routine oil changes necessary to the operation of your motor vehicle? no.

but if you do neither, the after effects of NOT having done them will eventually come home to roost in one form or another.

and if biking is your thing (as it has been for me as well), there are mental health benefits that you can't really quantify or explain, but you'll "get it".

unfortunately in this life, there are plenty of folks who seem to get a kick out of telling us that we're doing something wrong when we engage in any form of self-betterment...so go ride your *kitten* off and prove him wrong. :)

I like it. I think it's fun and enough of a challenge that I don't get bored.
