Calories consumed or net calories?

Hi friends! I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice on which number I should be more concerned about; total calorie consumption or net calorie consumption?
My allowance is 1430 and I tend to hit that or thereabouts most days. I do home workout dvds and a bit of walking (I wear a fitbit and have negative calorie adjustment set up), but I have set my activity level to inactive, so as to not overestimate my daily calorie burn... Anyway, I'm just realising that due to my steps and workouts, I'm not actually netting all that many calories. Is that okay? Is that the point of the deficit OR should my NET be at least 1200 in order to maintain good health?

Yeah, I'm kinda finding that I've been in a 1000 cal deficit for the day, rather than the 500 I was aiming for once all my exercise was logged. I think I'm confusing myself with jargon and conflicting opinions on how to move forward. I'm not interested in a VLCD, but I don't want to be living in a fantasy land of overeating and overestimating my activity levels.
