I am slowly transitioning into a vegetarian lifestyle and eventually I would like to be vegan. I dunno if it helps you loose weight or has that many health benefits but I want to do it for animal rights. Any tips on a healthy transition and good places to find healthy recipes? I'm not a big fan of soy. I also live in the Midwest were veg options are very scarce. Do the amount of calories you need to consume make any difference?

You said you didn't know if being vegan or vegetarian helps one lose weight, here's the answer- for weight loss all you need is a calorie deficit. That's it. Eat less then you burn.
I've known obese vegans. If I ate at a surplus , while still only consuming vegan foods, I would still gain weight.
    Weight gain- surplus
    Weight loss- deficit
It comes down to calories for weight loss. It makes no difference if you ate 1,500 cals of vegan foods or 1,500 of other foods , as far as weight loss is concerned.

As far as tips for becoming vegan, I can't help you there . I don't eat meat ,but only because I don't like the taste. As a baby, my mother would feed me meats and I would spit them out.but would eat all my veggies and pasta. This continued until I was able to verbally communicate that I didn't like the taste . so Im not a vegan or anything, I just don't like the taste so I don't eat it. I'm sure some vegans will chime in and help you along though.

Every couple of weeks, add a new meatless recipe to your repertoire. :)
