Who has venous insufficiency?

Options
Hello, I was wondering if any of you have venous insufficiency? I am wondering at what age you got it, the symptoms you have and if losing weight has helped and/or slowed the progression? I have been diagnosed with it and I am under 40. I am a little shocked by it, knowing the facts of the disease, with so many people in my family being obese and not having it I am shocked I have it. I am obese and live a relatively sedentary life so it really shouldn't be the shock it has been to me!

I don't have venous insufficiency, but I am however a nursing student learning about it currently. Obesity and smoking is a number one cause of venous insufficiency. Also, exercise is a HUGE aid in helping the problem. Even walking 20 minutes a night can be a huge start! Good luck <3

Thank you for your reply! I just recently graduated nursing school. I know that losing weight and diet will help and I am working on that. I have lost about 24 lbs since May and I am feeling pretty good about that. Good luck in school! :)

My family member's leg pain is a little different since his pain is in the lower back, buttock, back of the thighs and calves. He also experiences numbness of the feet. He's getting an MRI today and then hopefully he'll be off to see a specialist.

The main symptoms for venous insuffiency include ... Leg pain , swelling, skin changes (LDS) which is where the leg turns almost a brown/red/ purple color (depending on the stage) due to lack of blood flow , some people develop ulcers and varicosities that will bleed. However, it can be passed down most likely on your father's side of the family. We have young patients that are weight lifters and firemen and teachers needing this procedure due to reflux. Which is where the blood gets to the bottom of your leg and the valves can't push it back up. If you don't have a history of CAD then your doctor will more than likely reccomend you wear a 20-30 mmHg compression hose for a few months . if they do a venous reflux study and see any issues with your veins then you have to wear the hose for 3 months in order for insurance to help pay for the procedure. It's not a scary procedure. I actually

Also if you are exercising you need the compression during that time as well. I work with a very expirenced group of physicians and we actually train other physicians from all over the united States to preform this procedure. I have learned so much from these guys it is amazing. I scrub in the procedures and I can tell you anything you would like to k ow
