Stomach pain - can anyone help?

Hi all

Please can anyone help me. I am 10lbs away from my goal after losing 50lbs since March. I cut right down on sugar, hardly ate any chocolate or sweets and made healthy versions of any desserts or cakes. I stayed within my 1200 calories most of the time and exercised as well.

I have had a couple of family birthdays recently and that's when the trouble started. A couple of weeks ago just having a small piece of birthday cake caused horrible stomach pain, like it was laying like a burning lump in my stomach and nothing would relieve it. I know it's not gluten or wheat intolerance and I saw my GP after the pain went on for days and they diagnosed Gastritis from a virus as I had been out for a birthday meal at the same time but they did rule out food poisoning. I made healthy choices for my meal and didn't over indulge. The same thing has just happened again with a piece of carrot cake so I think I might be having a problem with sugar - has anyone else experienced this after restricting their diet and if so can it be overcome?

Thanks

Can't be diagnosed over the internet. Sorry. I can't digest potatoes, without causing interesting pains. I blame diverticulosis (diagnosed).

Fats might be another culprit. Go back to the doctor. It might be your gall bladder.

My son had this issue last year and after extensive tests it seems he had an ulcer in the oesophagus which was irritated by rich, heavy food (ice cream was a big trigger for him for some reason). They did not do an endoscopy with him as he is just a child and it resolved with the use of prescribed antacids over a few weeks, plus a very bland diet. Go and see your doctor again and insist on a referral to a gastric specialist.

    Hi jgnatca and 415sarahb2

Thanks for the quick replies. I do have an appointment with my GP in a couple of weeks if things haven't settled down and I'm hoping to be able to go back with some ideas as to what it could be as they tend to diagnose everything as a "virus".

Try one of the powerful OTC antacids like Zantac or Pepcid or even omeprazole, etc, between now and going back. Take a dose every day. It'll help with the diagnosis if that works (or doesn't work). Don't just take Tums or Mylanta, etc, because those are different and just change the pH temporarily. Make sure to bring them into the doc's to show what you tried and the dosage.

I have GERD and just did that myself, and it cut out a whole big step in what to do next. He was going to have me try it for a couple of weeks anyway, you see.

Short-term use is no problem with those, but look up any interactions with any medicines you take, of course.

I get this occasionally from certain processed sweets like cakes and stuff maybe you developed a sensitivity to something in it.

You lost quite a bit of weight pretty fast - I did this and ended up with gallstones - worth getting it checked out

    Hi
Thanks to everyone that answered. I have looked at the symptoms of gallstones and they don't seem to fit but GERD may be a possibility as I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and by doing a quick bit of research have found that GERD can be a complication of EDS. I will have to look into that a bit further before I go back to my GP so thank you cafeaulait7 as it looks like you might be on to something. In the meantime no more cake for me :(
    Thanks again

I get this ridiculous stomach pain from some artificial sweeteners, especially sucralose (like Splenda) and aspartame. Is it possible any of those sweets were made with baking splenda or something similar?

I have GERD, so I get pain after eating quite a few things.....I take antacids. You may want to speak with a GI doctor. I also had chronic gastritis (nightmare)....Maybe a GERD diet would help until you get to see a doctor.
