Hi, i had surgery on my lower skull/neck last year and ive just had the all clear to get back to the gym and loose the lbs ive gained.
I cannot swim very well but i want to learn and get better, i carry most my weigh round my bum and thighs and my tummy needs flattening too.....
Is swimming as beneficial as cross trainer/bike (I cannot run due to a health condition) or should i just stick to the cross trainer and cycling?
I just want to slim down a bit and feel better

I'm not an expert but I will give it a shot...weight loss is mostly going to come from your diet and eating at a deficit. So just make sure you are weighing and logging your food accurately and the pounds will start coming off. You can't really spot reduce areas of your body to lose fat from. From what I understand the first place your body wants to store fat is likely the last place it will take it from. So just stay vigilant and keep at it and the weight will come off. But you can't spot reduce unfortunately...it's mostly controlled by genetics.
Exercise can help you create that deficit but it's more for building up cardiovascular health and strength. As far as your question whatever exercise you choose is fine. Why not do both swimming and cross training/bike? Mixing things up will keep you interested and vested and will cut down on the boredom of a set schedule and doing the same thing over and over.
Took me two years to lose 40 pounds. Alot of trial and error, made mistakes along the way and learned what works and what really doesn't work for me. Feel free to ad me as a friend or if not good luck on your journey.0 -

Completely correct answer.
You may also want to consider some weight training to preserve some existing muscle. Otherwise your weightloss will be both fat and muscle.
Swimming can help a little with that.
The best exercise however is the one you enjoy and continue doing.0 -
