does anyone use the earned calories from exercise ?

  • I eat back 1/2-3/4 depending on how hungry I feel. I don't eat back all of them because I assume the burn is overestimated.

Yes, that way I'm properly fueled to continue exercising.

Half is safe, as most burns are notoriously high.

If you're using MFP's calorie estimates, it assumes you will be eating some to all of your exercise calories. Otherwise you might be creating to large a deficit.

it gives me 1200 to eat and typically I'm good for the day I kinda think of those extra calories if that makes sense

Yup, usually on the weekends. That's the good part of using a weekly calorie goal instead of a daily. My Monday workout fuels my Friday drinks ;)

I started using this app again on Friday and weighed in today and dropped 2 lbs where I was at a plateau for like 3 weeks or more

If MFP gives you 1200 calories then you should consider eating your exercise calories back, otherwise you're dropping below 1200 calories. Looks like you don't have a lot to lose, so you can probably increase how much you're eating and still lose at a good rate.

You should avoid large deficits in calories consumed vs. calories burned. The MFP net calorie allocation builds in a calorie deficit based on your goal loss per week. Expanding on that deficit can be unhealthy, especially if your goal is to lose 2 lbs a week. Eating back some of your exercise calories is generally a good idea.

With that said, most trackers overestimate calorie burn. Starting at around half your exercise calories might be a good idea initially. If you are losing weight slower than your goal over a month, perhaps you can reduce the percentage of exercise calories you consume. Alternatively, if you lose weight too fast, you can increase the percentage of exercise calories you consume. If your exercise burn is relatively small, then choosing not to eat them is probably fine (especially if you pick 1 or 1/2 a lb of weight loss per week as your goal).
