Running vs Stairmaster

I have been running 3 times per week, but as it is getting colder I am considering transitioning to my Stairmaster (the only exercise equipment I own). Will this give me similar benefits, calories burned, fitness level, as the running?

What's wrong with running in the cold?

Seriously though, you get back what you put into it. Stair climbing is highly recommended as x-training for runners and the activities certainly compliment each other. From what I've read at similar intensities running burns marginally more calories but given the choice between not exercising due to weather or using your Stairmaster the choice is obvious.

If running in the cold isn't your thing, consider getting a weighted vest (I have one that adds from 5-40 pounds). When I first started adding weight on the stairmaster, going just 5 minutes was killer! Something to consider if like Brian Sharpe mentioned you are worried about calorie expended difference.
