What do you want to gain from owning a device?

I have the Fitbit Surge and like it. I'm gadget geek. I like the customer support at Fitbit :)

That doesn't really narrow it down.

So I'd characterise the opportunities for tracking as around step counting, GPS tracking, ancillaries like cadence monitoring on a bike and heart rate. So it depends on what type of exercise you do as to whether either one is useful, although I'd note that Fitbit is a brand and they make a range of devices.

Fitbit make good step counters and their back end engine is solid so gets a good reputation. Their GPS tracking is weak and their HR tracking is pretty weak in comparison to others. Lots of people rave about the quality of customer support, although I'd turn that round and say that it appears they have a production quality problem, given the reports of the numbers of failures. I'd also observe that Fitbit has some useful integrations with other services.

Apple is proprietary and requires you to carry your phone as well as the watch to be useful. The step counting appears pretty reliable but GPS tracking is weaker, given the constraints around phone handsets. HR tracking is similarly a bit flaky. The Apple experience is good. The Apple device is very expensive in comparison.

Personally I'd say neither are all that worth spending the money on. Polar make better HR monitoring devices, if that's important to you, and Garmin make better GPS devices. Suunto are also very capable.

My inclination would be to go for Garmin, but thats because I'm a runner and a cyclist so it's of most use to me. Lots of Fitbit fanboys and girls will be along to rave about their devices. They are low cost in comparison to more superior devices though.
