Home elliptical?

Currently I have a full time job that runs from about 9pm to 5am, five days a week and once January rolls around I will be in school full time as well for nursing. Considering what I've spent on the gym with how much I've actually been able to go I would really prefer to get an elliptical at home instead however I have no idea where to start. What have you purchased or considered buying..have you had buyers remorse? Ideally I would like something that can be stored or moved in a way to save space, HR monitor isn't needed since I use an EKG strap, I don't need audio/video jack, training programs similar to gym equipment would be a plus, and I don't want to spend more than $800..I'm not really sure aside from that. =/ Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Pretty sure mom purchased our stair stepper, a mini one, from walmart for like, $80 or something. Basically one of these rad little guys.

It came with its own little program brochure but I never use it. I just go!
  • You can definitely get something great for under 800. The one I bought from wal-mart is a golds gym brand, about 400 total. It doesn't fold up, but honestly, you don't want something that folds up, unless its like that mini stair stepper someone linked, because fold ups will not be stable. Since you don't need the heart monitor, my only recommendation is to make sure it has enough leveling programs to challenge you and that you get one sturdy enough for your current weight. They have size limits. The first one we bought ended up breaking at the base, after 6 months because it was for people under 200 lbs and we didn't realize it.

I have a fold up that I got for ~400, and it's as stable as anything at the gym.

I have the AFG 3.1...It was $1000 (great no interest plan! I got it b/c of its ratings on Consumer Reports (hope it's okay to say that!). They might have one that's more in your price range. I really like it so far. At first I was lost w/ all of the brands out there, and there are some with more bells and whistles, but they got lower ratings.

I also read that looking at the weight of the flywheel is important--the heavier the better.
