The Netflix Workout

Buzzfeed came out with this a little while ago. The Netflix Workout you can do from your couch. I did it for a short while before getting distracted. When you have a very sedentary life like me, you like to be able to do your fun things and have a healthy life. I want to get back into doing this. I can watch my shows and movies and exercise. I think as silly as it sounds, people like me should try it.

I sincerely hope it does work for you. I, too, was very sedentary when I started out; however, if that workout had been my first choice, I would have quit. I needed a challenge to push myself, not something that would keep me where I started.0

hardly, anything to be moving is good. I do this sort of thing -more so the commercial ones or the show based sort of ones.

It is moving body parts about, and it's a step in the right direction I suppose, but I think you should aspire to more. You said yourself when you tried this you could only do it until you were distracted (by what?). If a sedentary lifestyle is holding you back from reaching your goals, perhaps this is not the right program.0

Okay, sifting through the harsh criticism.......on one hand, it's better than just planting your rear on the couch and melting into the upholstery. On the other hand, I guess this is where we have come to.......catering to the lazy, binge watching lifestyle (Congratulations America!!! We've done it. NOTE: We actually haven't done anything, just succumbed to a new low in mediocrity)0

It is moving body parts about, and it's a step in the right direction I suppose, but I think you should aspire to more. You said yourself when you tried this you could only do it until you were distracted (by what?). If a sedentary lifestyle is holding you back from reaching your goals, perhaps this is not the right program.
she doesn't have to move at all. she just needs to eat at a calorie deficit.0 -

OP - if you don't have equipment - google Walk Away the Pounds. These are Leslie Sansone workouts that are VERY basic cardio. There are several on YouTube.

The cardio is so simple that you can do the same moves during your favorite TV show. I know people that pick out a half hour program everyday.....this is their cardio.
The thing with cardio - form is not super important in most cases. But form for strength training is important. "Mind and muscle."0 -

I think I guess this was my biggest issue-
like- you're already sedentary- trying to find a way to make your workout lazy too just seems counter productive.
Don't make your work out fit a sedentary life style- chose to stop being that person and make deeper changes.
Being said @moyer566 is correct- she doesn't NEED to move at all- she just needs a calorie deficit.-1 -
Agreed Amy, not bad at all,
fitness needn't be fascist and this couch workout is great especially for the frail, post op folk, elderly and people with heart and feet probs etc. There are countless numbers of people that cant just start a normal workout for all manner of chronic health problems. It is for good reason that all health and fitness experts advice people with health issues to visit the GP before undertaking a diet and or exercise routine.
There is also a great workout for the bedridden and not at all undemanding given the yoga principles of sustaining a relatively easy position; eg; press your arms into the mattress, hold and repeat; lift leg or head an inch off the bed and hold, etc.
I know someone middle aged who thought they were in reasonably good health and wanted to get fit but after one workout, tore the plantar tendon in both feet because she had gone from zero to workout without any warm up. Her life had been working 12 hour days at a desk and for years, not a lazy person at all but kids and car and no time to do much else; after a decade her calf muscles had retracted a bit and a normal workout injured her. It was four years with lots of whole leg physio' and foot-care before she was pain free and flexible enough to do a normal workout.
If you can't do the usual workouts or don't feel motivated but would like to, there is a tendency to feel defeatist and think that you can't and so a small amount of relaxed effort can be a way in to cultivating fitness that would otherwise seem or genuinely be, impossible. Under these circumstances, and if couch workout seems manageable and fun, how can that not be a good thing?

To clarify, this Netflix workout was just an idea for a warm up, not the whole exercise regimen. Mostly I like to walk and I want to work up to jogging and running since I loved it as a child. I also have access to a gym as a college student. What I want is a varietal regimen. If that makes sense.0

Sounds good OP. Before I learned about CICO, I started out with sitting down exercises. I soon realized it gave me the energy to get up and do more and more things. I was able to challenge myself better because I gave myself some confidence that I could do more than I thought I could. I started out small. Now my house is spattered with equipment, weights etc. and while I watch my calories for weight loss, I exercise for fitness. I think finding something you like and will do, even if you quit and do something else, or cycle back to it later, is great! It's called a journey for a reason and we learn and grow with it everyday! I watched the entire 9 seasons of Supernatural on my treadmill. Season 10 just came out yesterday. I have a rule that I can't watch it unless I'm walking.0

Arguing against this workout is like saying "calisthenics is crap, you can't get a good workout if you don't walk, run or do elliptical" its absolute madness. And why would calisthenics be better if you are staring at a wall instead of a tv? I challenge anyone to compare the netflix workouts to anything you will find on darebee.com. Its the same moves.

@susan_mcconnell even better! walking is great. I started out walking my dog and we got on nice long walks. and i don't know what the weather is like by you but i love walking fall.

When I wanted to start moving more, I knew I needed to combine it with something I enjoyed AND make it something I did every day. So I set up my treadmill in front of a tv in the basement and instead of watching my shows on the couch, I walked on the treadmill. Here's another minimalist and warm up fat burning exercise that will raise your heart rate for about 20 – 30 minutes and day (the daily RDM).
Housework can do this and many other activities that keep you slightly out of breath, for about half an hour each day but if you are not very fit or your life-style is sedentary; this three minute routine is good Seven times, once a day: Total time: 21 minutes.
1. Exercise hard for 2 minutes –
(Don’t overdo it: housework, dance or limber up until slightly out of breath; gasping is not good)
2. Rest for one minute.
3. Repeat 7 times
Here's another one you can do in front of the TV: I'm also desk bound through the day and was delighted to find the science on this:
If you set a timer to stand up and sit down again, once every 20 minutes - just that, it has been shown to stimulate fat burning hormones. it won't help you lose weight but will help to keep things ticking over and I noticed a difference after a week or so, in general energy levels.0 -

Did you actually click the link? It's a bit more involved then I think you are giving it credit. I could see how it would be a good starting point for someone who is extremely sedentary.... being pretty harsh with your criticism IMHO.
