Does anyone know how the app works this out? What is it based on? Does it go off your age etc? Thanks

It goes off of MFP's estimate of your TDEE (total calories you burn in a day), plus the exercise you logged that day (if any), less what you ate that day. That daily calorie deficit is then multiplied by 35 (5 weeks X 7 days) and then divided by 3,500 (you need a ~3,500 calorie deficit over time to lose a pound of fat) to reach the number of pounds you would be estimated to lose over 5 weeks, and that is subtracted from whatever weight you most recently logged. (ETA - and obviously it would add to your weight if it turned out that day you ate MORE than your TDEE + exercise.)
MFP's estimate of your TDEE is based on the stats (age/sex/height) and activity level (sedentary, lightly active, etc.) you entered when you set up your account and your most currently logged weight.
Please keep in mind that that estimation is not at ALL reliable. It assumes 2 things that are patently untrue for 99% of the population - that every single day for 5 weeks you will burn and eat the exact same number of calories as you did today, and that weight loss is linear. You will most likely not eat and burn the same number of calories every day, and even if you did, 5 weeks from today you will almost certainly NOT weigh the number MFP gives you anyway, due to water weight fluctuations and all sorts of other factors. I honestly don't even know why they still display that "information."0 -
All I know is it's completely worthless and inaccurate for me whether I'm try to cut, gain, or maintain weight.0

It has never once been accurate for me however I do like seeing the number they come up with every night.0

Ditto this

I really wish they would do more of a trending type look ahead, based on say the previous weeks worth of entries. Far more likely to have some token amount of accuracy of predictions.0
