Base Pre-Workout meals on Calories or Macros?

Before you hit the gym (talking about long distance runners and weight trainers), what is what you focus on? Do you focus on how many calories youre eating (like eating 500 calories before a workout) or do your focus on how many grams of carbs/protein youre eating?
