Roux-en-y surgery Patient needs Encouragement

I under went Roux-en-y surgery on September 24, 2015. My health and weight was out of control. My weight 358.5 and my blood sugar A1C was 12.7! I elected to have Roux-en-y surgery, as of my last doctors appointment I was 318. I'm just over three weeks after surgery, still having to eat a puree diet. I could use advice please, I'm walking about ten miles a day...

What specifically do you need advice about?

Foods to stay away from, and anything that can be useful

Well, I'm guessing you'd be better off asking your Dr about that, since you are post-op. He/she would have a much better idea of what you can or can't eat. You might also want to see if there are any forums online that are specifically for those who have had the same surgery.

I also had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on Sept. 30. My starting weight was 280 and I am currently at 255. I'm not sure how your surgeon works but mine has this huge group of doctors and specialist that we all work with. I feel fortunate that a nutritionalist is amongst those available to me. I'm sure you know how important protein is. I have been using the bariatric fusion brand and because I'd rather drink water for my fluids I have been mixing mine with nonfat Greek yogurt. I spilt 1 cup of it into two servings then freeze it. It's great that way! I also enjoy squash, or mashed sweet potatoes. I thin them out a bit. Puréed tuna or chicken isn't horrible. Unsweetened apple sauce and low fat cottage cheese too. Softly scrambled egg whites. My doctor said always eat proteins first then veggie or fruits.

Oh, also Pocket Protein! It's a 2oz liquid but has a whopping 15 or 20 grams of protein depending on the flavor :) these are great to get protein in! I hope this was somewhat helpful. I like hearing what others are doing for her puréed stage as well. The patients seem to get more creative than the doctors. Just stay away from carbs, sugars and fats!

Feel free to add me if you'd like! I've been on MFP for awhile, I just don't have any friends/supporters that have gone this route in their weight loss journey.

Hi Vee, I ama nurse and also an RNY. Your protein at this junction is CRITICAL. You should be drinking 3 Protein drinks a day and 2 meals. Protein first then veggie or fruit if you have room. Also make sure you are getting your 60-64 oz of water in and DO NOT DRINK FOR 1 HOUR AFTER YOU EAT! How big is you anastomoses? Make sure you are measuring your foods. My surgery was on 9/11, i am barely getting 2oz of tuna/chicken.....etc and I have no room for anything else, patience it will get better. :-)

Hi Vee, are you still posting in my Fitness Pal? I had my surgery in October of 2010. I have been using MyFitnessPal to jump start a re-start so to speak. Would like to connect with other RNXY members. Let me know if you are interested in connecting . . . hope your journey has been a good one. Mine was.
