Not sure how much it is in the USA, but the garmin HRM is good. I've been using it for the past 4 months and it's very reliable.0 -
Plye Sports aren't too bad. You can a model with chest strap from amazon for $30-40 20-30 depending on color.
- Estimates calories burned
- Shows Max, Min, Avg and current HR during workouts
- Settings include weight, VO2max , and age (information used to estimate calorie burns)
- Can change batteries in both chest strap and watch
- Waterproof
I bought mine April 2, 2013. It still works. You do have to make sure to get the contacts wet on the HR strap or you will get some really out there readings. It also gives weird readings when the batteries are low. I haven't needed to change the battery in the watch yet, but the strap has been changed twice (it was being used 5-6 days a week and sometimes 2-3 times in a day). I stopped using it as of Feb this year, but only because I have the Fitbit Surge now which has a built in HRM. My husband uses it from time to time during home workouts though (it's pink so he won't leave the house with it).
Since I didn't always use it for steady state cardio, I would only log 80% of the reported calorie burn. Worked great. I was eating all the calories from exercise/fitbit adjustments and losing faster than I planned.
editing: Giving more info since I'm at my PC now and fixing price range (I estimated high a little high).
Here's a link for you:
Pyle Sports PHRM38PN Heart Rate Monitor
I paid $26.43 for the light pink version which is currently $20.94. The basic black one is $19.87.
If your going to get a HRM, I definitely recommend getting one with a HR strap for better accuracy. I had one of the watch ones from walmart and it only picked up my HR when I touched a button on it, so the calorie burn was really off. I don't know if the newer models have continuous HR readings or not, but the one I had did not.0 -
I got a Polar FT4 off Amazon for around $50 I believe. I've had it around 6 months and haven't had any problems yet. Just remember it's only accurate for steady state cardio.0

what do you mean by steady cardio?
Steady state cardio just means your effort is about the same level the whole workout, like walking on a treadmill, vs something like interval training where your effort varies throughout the work out.0 -

I still use mine when I do HIIT, I just remember that the calorie shown isn't as accurate so I only eat about half of what it tells me.0 -
