Question about exercise bikes

Hi everyone
I've just joined a new gym due to moving to a different area. Because I get really bad shin splints I tend to cycle more than run. However the exercise bikes at my new gym are not what I'm used to. They're the ones that have back support, and rether than cycling so your legs push down they more sort of push out so the movemet doesn't really simulate a real bike. Does anyone know the sort I mean? Are these types of bikes as effective for a cardio weightless workout as a regular exercise bike? Thanks in advance for any answers

I feel like I get a good workout when I'm on the recumbent bike. I sweat more on the bike than on the elliptical. BUT the calories burned readout shows I burn nearly twice as many calories on the elliptical than the recumbent bike.

I sweat more also on the bike than I do on the elliptical. I do the elliptical more often, so maybe I'm more used to it. My calorie burns from the elliptical are "greater" too, but I take the calorie burn readout from the machine with a grain of salt. I know it's inflated.
