Abs?!

I am an ab newbie! I was feeling under challenged in life, so I've decided to put the abs on the table, and make myself a personal goal of achieving some definition.
I am interested in knowing how long abs take to develop, but more importantly, what exercises and stretches promote ab definition and what type of routine would I be looking at?
Thank you for all your help!

Visible abs are a function of 2 things -
1) reduce body fat to such a point that underlying abs become visible
2) develop abs enough so there is something to show as body fat drops
There's an old expression that abs are made in the kitchen. IMO, that's wrong, or at least incomplete. Abs are made in the gym, but revealed in the kitchen. That means that diet plays a big role, as does exercise.
As to what exercises to do... there are lots that you can do, but they only work if you sufficiently and properly engage your core. If you do an exercise incorrectly, it's not going to do much for you. Exercises can range from crunches to planks to knee raises to deadlifts, plus a dozen others... but again, they only work if you do them correctly.0
