The "Dumb" Questions

I buy those 11oz EAS bro-shakes from time to time. On a recent supply run (for my office feeds) I grabbed a 4-pack. Clerk asks me, "Do they work."

Dead silence.

(How in the heck do I answer that? Do they work? Work what? Do I talk about #cico. Do I talk about #iifym? Do I talk about training? WHAT DO I SAY!?!?!?)

Customer behind me not patiently waiting in line at 6 in the morning, clears her throat.

"Yeah dude, they work."

"They give me protein and whatnot. That's all they're supposed to do."

LOL I had a cashier ask me that when I was buying a tub of protein powder. I just said "yeah, gives me extra protein". I think they assumed it was a gainer.

I dunno why you get so much blowback sometimes for saying protein shakes are just food...

    Magic pill thinking.

I would agree. I'll give the supplement companies kudos on their marketing strategies.... THEY WORK!

Like the saying goes...."there's a sucker born everyday."

Doesn't have to be that way. Its like the conversation, I mean sales-pitch I overheard at Starbucks for "The Crazy Wrap things" -- a wretched hive of scum and villainy if there was ever one. I wanted to order a pot of boiling coffee and burn my ears out.

In retrospect that would have been very succinct way of answering, but at 6 am and after a volume squat session earlier that morning, my brain was just not that supple.

I used to schill AdvoCrap....... So I'm guilty of falling trap to the "woo" factor. Those companies prey on people who are looking for ANYTHING or ANY kind of advantage to "jump start," "melt away," "cleanse you," "shed fat and build lean muscle," "***insert sales phrase here***"

Thankfully, it didn't take me long to figure out what was really going on. I jumped ship as fast as I could. It honestly felt like a mini-cult.

One heck of a way to learn. Hopefully you didn't sell the farm to keep the house.

How old are they? If they aren't working, you might need to tighten the rules around the house. ;)

Nope, I did take the plunge though and went straight to "Advisor" which is a $2500 "investment." After figuring it all out I broke even as all my "profits" went back into product usage for myself.

Unfortunately, I am rarity and many people do "lose the farm......"

I constantly get asked stupid questions at work, mostly by my boss who eats nothing but garbage, smokes like a chimney and downs red bulls by the pack.

"I heard popcorn (or other random food) is good for you. Is that true?"
I spew the same thing almost every time.
"Well I mean, pretty much everything is fine in moderation..."
"Oh so you mean no butter or salt, right??!!"
"... No, I mean, everything in moderation..."

Or she tries to ask me about some new cleanse she heard of. Just stop! Put down the Cheetos and take a walk or something! Start there.

Why do you look like you just had an evil thought and who is just food?!?

Yes, they work. They are a good tasting quick blast of protein and calories after a long run when my stomach is not ready for real food.

I know that's not what the cashier was asking, but that is what they do.... And for that, they work.

protein shakes are just food. They aren't a crazy supplement or weight loss device. They are just... food.

And I always have evil thoughts. That's why. muwahaha

But I thought I was allowed to eat complete garbage as long as I do so with a protein shake. That's how people get such lean muscles, haven't you heard? :p

Ha ha. Correcto mundo - that's the prevailing wisdom.

Extended family does this to me all the time and I quote "Hey we've decided to get healthy and eat like you." Um okay. Try to explain their misconceptions. "Yeah we eat more fish like you do now. We're eating healthy."
