I did BP for 3/4 years. It's a good way to begin to learn all the different body parts you're trying to strengthen. If you're doing lighter weights in BP with the many reps BP's programs uses, it tends to be more of a cardio workout, whereas heavy lifting focuses on lighter reps/heavier weights. I eventually got sick of BP and found that my body shape really changed with heavy lifting.

Edit: I love kettlebell one-legged deadlifts in my lifting routine, if I don't the regular deads. Change it up is pretty much the best medicine I can prescribe.

It depends what you want to get out of it, are you trying to build muscle or do you just want to burn some calories?

I do both, I like Body Pump for cardio but I wouldn't do it in place of heavy lifting.

body pump if you're looking for a cardio/circuit program
lift heavy if you're looking to gain significant strength

I wouldn't limit myself to either-or if you have two goals. BodyPump is an awesome class for calorie-burn and endurance, but it won't make you muscley. Heavy lifting and a good diet will.

Heavy lifting will add the muscle. You might not be losing weight but guaranteed your clothes are going to start getting looser and fitting differently.

I'd do heavy lifting to add the muscle you want they worry about cutting up if you really want to.
  • Thanks, I will give body pump a go and see how it goes. The kettlebells have been really good and I am starting to notice some little muscles forming on my arms and shoulders, plus my belly is shrinking a little bit. That's probably dowen to eating lots healthier too though!

I will start with body pump then see how that goes and go on to heavy lifting after a while I think...

if you are new or afraid of going to the weight room floor BP. If not, Heavy lifting all the way. Lifting is the best way and fastest way to change your body. I was doing BP 3-4 x / wk for 1 1/2 years. Never saw a difference. My body has changed a lot since I quit doing BP and just lifted.
