Hello from Colorful Colorado! No I don't smoke pot.

Hey everyone, I didn't know there was even a community part of this app til today ha ha! Just thought I'd say hi and introduce overweight me so someone 6 months from now will remember and be like "Hey I remember you! You made it!".

That and not gonna lie, I'm needing a little motivation. No one I know is overweight. They are ALL those unicorns you hear about who are skinny because they just are. None of my friends has to watch what they eat and I'm not sure any of them have ever been to a gym because they don't need too, they are just skinny people in general. All due fairness to them, I am aware this is because they have a healthier relationship with food in general, and I don't resent them, they are my friends for a reason. But even so, it means I don't get a lot of support from any of my people in real life. I turned down cheesecake for dessert tonight and was pretty proud of myself for it and I don't think they understood why. They can just eat it without thinking twice so it doesn't mean something to them to choose not to when it's something to be struggled with. Anywhoo, I need other support sources. How's your day going? :)

I just had to pop in and say hello from cool Canada and I don't smoke pot either. Congrats to saying no to the cheesecake.

Thanks! It was harder than I anticipated. Its easy to just not BUY it at the store, but when someone hands you free cheesecake on a plate ready to eat that's a challenge! I feel great about it though!

Lol, the pot thing wa s sort of a joke. In the States if you tell literally anyone that you are from Colorado (one of only 4 states where marijuana is legal for recreational use) they automatically assume you are a pothead. Its both annoying and funny;)

Ok, here are some food ideas for after you are smoking weed...

:) I can see how it could get old quick.

Actually weight loss isn't as bad as it might seem. Log your food, log your exercise, and read, read, read, then read some more. You can eat almost anything you want in moderation. If you add exercise you can eat more of it. Accurate logging will guide you towards the goals for loss, just be cautious about not eating back all your exercise calories until you confirm the accuracy of your exercise logging.

Calories Out > Calories In Remember this primary rule. It IMO trumps all others, though naturally getting your proper nutrition is important, and exercise can speed the process and/or increase your overall health and fitness levels.

Thanks Robert! I'm really happy with calorie counting! You hear that it's hard to do and really annoying but I think it's awesome and it's teaching me to have a healthier relationship with food in general. Now I have been doing it for a few months food has become more of a math exercise than a social or emotional one! I think that's a good start! And I feel so satisfied when I can add a cardio calculation to see how much my effort has bought me in edibles!

OK, I like food. I'm not about to deny it. And sometimes I like really junky foods that satisfy. Like that piece of cheesecake you didn't eat... breaks my heart to see cheesecake go unloved like that!

BUT, you can have that piece of cheesecake, and you've obviously already seen how. If exercise and getting healthy is also part of your goal, or at least acceptable to you, then you open up the luxury of eating more of what you want.

I often go out and go for a solid bike ride, and bank calories so we can head out for the day and I can eat what I want through the day. I make adjustments later in the day to keep my nutrition in check.

Sounds like you already have a good jump on things, as well as the proper attitude.

Great work on the cheesecake! I found that it makes you stronger when you say no. Best of luck with your weight loss :)

@Robert I have been trying to work out in anticipation of being able to enjoy some special food later in the day! But tonight was an impromptu invite and I swiped the box from the bin to check calories (had 180 left after dinner) and that piece of cake was 490 calories!!!! OMG! So I promised myself a tall Starbucks at 190 cal in exchange for the cheesecake denial ha ha! Good strategy no? :)

Thanks @amez_7! I was really proud of myself, and my hubby glowing with pride has given me the most strength!

At the end of the day any strategy that keeps you within your goal for calories is a good one. I actually look at things more in the terms of a week myself. If I have "earned" that piece of cheesecake earlier in the week, I can eat it and still stay at my loss goal. But by looking at the calories of such foods, over time you tend to not eat them as often and that creates better habits long term.

It feels really good to have great support within the home. I have always complained about my weight and my partner never pushed me to lose weight but when I finally said that's it ( 5 days ago ) he was like okay I'm with you all the way. I didn't believe he would but he has been really great! He hadn't had a fat day in his life nor have our kids. So I do find being on here to talk to others who are feeling the same as I am really helps.

@Robert that's in my long term plan for sure. I'd like to get to a point where cheesecake isn't as appealing because my taste has matured to actually WANTING healthier food because I like it. My whole life all I've ever been fed came from a box mostly, so I really want to try the grass on the other side of the fence to feel better in general!

@amez_7 My husband is the same way! He would never get on my case about my weight, he's very gentle, but I told him I need him to want this too and he promised to try to notice my gains at the very least. So that's a step in the right direction. I don't think he has it in him to try and question my food choices or outright ask me if I'm keeping up on this. But I think, knowing myself, that his actively noticing my gains will be enough!

Hello cigaram720, I visited your lovely state and did smoke the legal pot. And, well, that's why I'm back here. Even though I hiked and biked, I also ate, alot! And, no, I didn't visit for the ganja, came for the mountains and hot springs. I was at my goal weight for about 6 months but lost all self control! Seems I couldn't resist the cheesecake. Lesson learned. Silly me, thinking I could revisit my college days. Good luck on your journey, sounds like you've this covered.

@farmerpam1 I'm glad you're getting back on track! I've only ever tried to smoke twice in my life and got Pneumonia BOTH times. Laid up for 2 weeks. Miserable. I have nothing against other people doing it though, my lungs just don't appreciate the green haha!

Hold on now. This changes everything. Maybe your intro thread should have been titled...

"Hello from Colorful Colorado! No I don't smoke pot because it gave me pneumonia!"

    Just joking.

As for the food and cravings changes, they do happen for a lot of people. These days often the sugary stuff turns me off, and I'd rather have some kale/superfood salad, or greek yogurt with some fruit for a snack.

Colorado is one of the leaner states in the Country and depending on where you are in the state can make a big difference. Boulder is leaner than most anywhere else, but having moved to Frederick recently, I notice larger people out here in the burbz. Also, the stores are not as pretentious out here and cater more to the average person as opposed to those who are extremely "health conscious". I say that with quotes because it's a huge fad among lots of the people I meet. It's the most superficial, shallow type of health consciousness I've ever seen.

That said... Hi! I'm also in Colorado. It's nice here, even if you don't smoke pot.

@BecomingBane A fellow Mountain Moose! Right on! I know what you mean about that pretentious health stuff. I cannot tell you how many Vegans I have met out here who are like Vegan Lite. They have a moral objection to animal products, but they pack away so many potatoes, bananas and rice they're bigger than me! No self-respecting Vegan is really that nonchalant about healthy eating, the true lifestyle Vegans I know would never tolerate that nonsense. I'm right there with you on the "top ten thinnest states" thing too. Part of the reason I'm here at only 176lbs, (165 now!) even though that's NOTHING compared to the challenge other people have taken up (I bow at your feet 100+ club, you are all amazing!!!) is because of how self-conscious it make me to be surrounded by really thin, active, fit people all the time. I see someone who is overweight maybe one out of every 20 people I interact with in a day, so it just hits home a little harder and more obvious in the Mile High City....

@BecomingBane I think to here in south Denver (470/25 area) there is a lot more judgment about being unfit. This is a really wealthy area (I just live here, I'm among, not one of ha ha!), and most of the people in this area indulge in active lifestyles and healthy behaviors in general, so when my chubby butt goes out in public here, there are actual obvious signs of judgment. And to be fair, they are right. I have nothing to blame but my own laziness for my body, and that means I have the power to change it!
