Usually the best exercise for people with arthritis, especially when initiating exercise and just getting used to it, is water exercises like swimming or water aerobics. You can work on improving cardiovascular fitness without loading the joints and causing increased pain.

    Pool exercise would be #1

If you don't have access to a pool look for a DVD for arthritis sufferers. It can give you specific modifications.

Peggy Cappy has a couple DVDs specific to yoga for people with arthritis. She had a long standing series on PBS. You might try your local library

water exercises are nice because it supports your body

you can try restorative yoga and let the instructor know you have arthritis. or chair yoga. or yin.
I have bad joints and do aerial yoga which supports my body . my symptoms are much better from the regular stretching and use of my joints.

of course, check with your rheumatologist before doing anything

yoga could help! I have psoriasis arthritis and it helps me, especially in the hips and wrists. It build muscular support in the joints and gives nice range of motion increases. Make sure you go really slow, stop if you feel pain and do not push yourself too hard. You don't want an injury. Find a teacher you like and explain any psychical limitations or concerns to them. A few private lessons to get you started might be a good idea. They can usually help you adjust positions to work with your body. if you can't afford classes or feel self conscious try Yoga with Aidre on youtube, she did a nice 30 day challenge and a yoga for beginners series. She goes really slow and explains things well.
