Went to the doctor for the first time in years and walked out with two different blood pressure meds. Not what I expected but I needed that slap in the face. I have always been a big guy, not sure I remember ever being under 300lbs. I really want to make a change and I want that change to last a life time. I want to see my daughter grow up and I would really like to be able to enjoy her passion with her which is softball. My doctor told me that I am to stay under 1800 calories a day and that in one month I will have to show him my progress on myfitnesspal. Lets see where this goes.

Logging into MFP is a great start. You will find many inspirational stories that show you it is possible and will find a great deal of people who will help cheer you on your path. Believe in yourself and you will get there.0

Wow 1800 is starting strict for someone at 433....but ok. Good luck and this is a very popular community. You will find many stories like yours that ended successfully if you look at the success forum or use the search0

I posted this a while back but it's always worth repeating:
This is going to take time. A. LOT. Of. Time. You will get frustrated. You will want to quit. You will feel depressed from time to time. Some of those times will even been on the weeks when you make progress. Here's the thing: DO NOT QUIT!!!! The sweat, the pain, the tears, all of it will be worth it, and sometimes it will be as simple as dropping a single pant size which makes you feel like the king/queen of the world.
Weigh your food. This is far more important than weighing yourself. We often come on here and have the best intentions of logging everything accurately, but often we have no idea how much 2 oz. of pasta really is (it's depressingly little), so we put 2 oz when we just ate 7. I am proud of the weight I've lost, but if I want to continue losing I have to be certain the food I'm taking in is really the correct amount or I am sabotaging myself.
Be honest. Log everything, even the stuff you are embarrassed about. The only one you'd be lying to is yourself if you conveniently "forget" to log the half-bag of potato chips. You will look back and wonder why you aren't losing as you should. It's okay to have bad days, and okay to have good days. Sometimes your victories will be on the scale, other days they'll be non-scale victories. Just be honest with yourself.
This journey is about making progress, not being perfect. DO NOT QUIT and you will see rewards.
Sending you a friend request. Just want to let you know I'm rooting for you and look forward to hearing your success stories!0 -
Hi Richard! Congrats on taking the first steps! Remember it's a journey, not a destination. You can certainly do this, you may even find it to be fun along the way. There is a great community here and tons of support. It will not happen overnight, or in 3 months. It took longer than that to get where you are now, so give it time and effort. Do not give up, you are way stronger than you know!0

I think it was a challenge and I'm looking forward to completing it. We will see what happens.
Thank you to everyone that has responded. I am at work so I will have to go back and read everything.0 -
Good Luck with your journey! With time & dedication, you'll get there! You might want to try to join some groups that fit your interest/goals on MFP. I have had a few "false starts" before on MFP, but this time with being more involved in the community aspect, I'm having more success than I ever have before.
This is one of my favorite groups that you might be interested in. It's a really supportive, positive group, and there's a lot of great info on the posts. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/3322-100-pounds-with-no-surgery
Good Luck! You've got this!0 -

Hi Richard and welcome to MFP. The previous posters have said it all really. Grayman makes a number of very valuable points and you would do well to print out his reply and keep it as your personal mantra. The system works as countless people have proven. But it only works if you follow the program to the letter as Grayman so ably put it. The support is here but the execution as with all of us lies with ourselves. I wish you well on your journey to a healthy and active future.0

best of luck to you, you can do it ! I will send a friend request. Make sure you log your food everyday, you will definitely see results. Also if you can, buy a scale - weigh everything you eat so you can be accurate with your calories counting. I am also on 1800 calories a day.

That was my first thought. At 300 I was started at (if I remember correctly?) 2000, maybe 2100 -- and I'm only 5'2". Given that 1500 is considered the minimum amount for healthy men, I'd imagine your number to lose would be much higher than 1800. But I'm not a doctor, nor a nutritionist.
OP, if you find that 1800 is too strict, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about how he's getting that number and maybe switching it. Consistency is going to be key, and I'd be worried that you're being set up to fail.0 -

I agree with this, considering I am a nutritional professional. I would suggest starting by cutting your calories by 500 a day. By the end of the week, you'll have a total of 3500 calories loss from your diet which is equivalent to 1 pound. However, you may lose more than one pound from changing your eating and exercise habits along with the 350 reduction.0 -

I agree with this. totally. I'm 5'3" and I lose a pound a week on 1450 calories a day. If you were 5"5, 443, and a dude who didn't exercise I calculate that you could eat close to 3000 calories a day and still lose 2lbs a week or more. 1800 does seem unnecessarily low but I'm no doctor. Maybe doc is real worried about BP numbers and needs a faster weight loss.
Good luck!0 -

You can do this! Stay very busy. Drink, drink and drink water. Have you considered attending an Overeaters Anonymous meeting? Good Luck. Please send good wishes my way as well. Thanks.0

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all of the opinions and good thoughts. He did tell me that it's not a big deal to go over but to shoot for under 1800. I think I can do it. I want to be a success story.0

Welcome and well-done for starting your journey. My advice would be keep things simple at the beginning, you can make your head explode with diets, carbs, sugars etc etc. I would recommend doing excerise even if it's a ten minute walk a day and gradually add on more time. I started gym on day 1 I could only do 5 mins on cross trainer now I can do an hour! I couldn't run but now I can I've lost in 12 months over 3 stone and in-between broken my foot so it just shows anyone can do. The best of luck don't give up and learn to enjoy excerise it makes it literally a walk in the park!0
-
Wishing you the best of luck - I promise you can do this
We will help you here at MFP. Stay strong!0 -
Richard,
I was 577+ lbs. I am now 347 lbs.
You can do this. It's all about portion size and moving your body.
I don't go to the gym. I'm not on no drugs. I've not had surgery.
I walk. I weigh my food. I don't drink soda. Not even diet soda. No sweet tea. I cut extra sugar. I use to be diabetic. Use to have high blood pressure.
My Instagram is unlocked. It's mrdotts check out my food n exercise. It's hard work man. But it's possible.
Wish you Lots of Luck.0 -
