To train the core or not to train the core

Options
I have a friend that has been on MFP now for over 100 days, he has lost 50+ pounds, down from 340. He is now going to the gym in the mornings before work. An issue has arisen, about a week before he started coming to the gym he started to experience back pain. He went to a chiropractor and got an adjusted. He informed the Dr. of his recent weight loss and then was told that he should ultimately expect more until he is down to his goal weight.He has since had more back pain. I understand that if you have a strong core that will alleviate pressure from the spine. However he doesn't really want to do any muscle building right now he is focused on weight loss. Is it safe or smart or worth the effort for him to core stuff. What should I have him do if it right? Should I incorporate weight or keep it to body resistance. I care about his safety first and foremost but his goal is a very close second. How should I go about helping him? Stick with the cardio machines and Circuit training or change it up and go for his core,Safely??

    You can get both weight loss and become stronger at the same time. You won't really build any muscle, especially on a calorie deficit. So the only thing your friend is doing is preventing himself form getting injured. The stronger your muscles, the less likely they will get injured during minor exercises. Also, weight training, along with protein, can help prevent muscle loss which will be important in reaching weight goals. The more muscle you have, the less you really need to lose.

    Definitely go with some core workouts mixed in with whatever else they're doing. You have to have a strong core in order to do just about anything related to exercise, whether it's cardio or strength training. And it'll help with the back pain, too.

    By they way, congratulate them on the 50 lbs lost so far. That's awesome!

    I'm of the belief that weight loss should never consist of only a calorie deficit and cardio.... he should be preserving his muscles as well. That means strength training. Doesn't have to be heavy, can be light weight or body weight reps, but I do think he needs SOME kind of exercise other than cardio... (otherwise when he gets down to goal weight, the lack of muscle mass will be evident and he won't be as happy with the results).

    Adding some form of resistance training would be beneficial. I wish that I had started sooner than later. Waiting until you get to goal weight is a bad strategy IMHO. I do a lot of core work in an effort to reduce the possibility of back issues.
