Hello fellow people whom are bettering your bodies. I have been in the losing weight thing for some time and have lost a pretty penny of weight. However, I have stopped loosing though I have not gained I'm looking for a push down the loosing slide. I have a problem with being really busy and not having a lot of time to eat and then I get to an animal mode of devouring my kitchen. Anyway, I was thinking maybe if I start my day with a protein shake then I will not get into a crazed animal mode of devouring my kitchen. I don't want to bulk up though because I am a lady. I know nothing about protein shakes or the types of protein shakes there are and all that jazz. I just know that my protein consumption is minimal and I'm looking for a boost. Any help would be helpful.

You won't bulk up drinking a protein shake. If your shake brings you over your calorie goal for the day, you won't lose at the rate you want. Otherwise, they are a nice way to add protein to your day. You can make a shake very simple and low calorie, or you can fill it with fixings and they can because meal replacements. Whey protein is popular. I use casein because it works better in some recipes I make.

How does it work better? As in the taste or the effects?

The effects are...more protein. Getting enough protein is important in supporting lean body mass.

Some taste better than others. Quest tastes good. And you can buy a small package at GNC rather than a huge tub so you can try a few flavors first.

It isn't the protein that makes big muscles. A big chunk of it is eating enough calories. An even bigger chunk is lifting weights.

A protein shake will not make you bulky. It may not be necessary because you may be able to eat enough protein (most Americans do), but it won't make you bulky. :)

Ok a few more questions for you if you don't mind, what is your favorite way to have your shake? As in with water or milk or almond milk? Additives? And if you drink one Do you notice a difference in your hunger throughout the day?

I'm a no fuss girl. Is it better in almond milk, peanut butter, banana? Yes. I don't like to drink a lot of calories though. I can put it in water, with ice, and blend it with a little splenda and be happy. Sometimes I'll add like 50 calories worth of frozen berries.

I drink mine before bed if I'm hungry, or in the middle of the day if I want a 100 calorie snack bigger than my thumb. (I use 20g instead of a whole scoop).

I have a very hard time meeting my protein goal each day and I'm trying to build muscle so I try to do a protein shake each day. I blend it with soy or almond milk, frozen banana & ice. Sometimes I'll add pb or espresso powder. It really fills me up.

Can't argue with the nice results of some users. But, I respectfully submit that we've been advertised and marketed to a bit too much with the protein shake business.

It depends on your goals. That said: you won't be not a "lady" whether you have a shake or not.

    What are your goals?

I just started protein shakes and I like them. I have one in the morning before the gym and sometimes I'll have one during the day if I know I'm going to fall short on my daily goal. I guess it's just preference but I use 1% milk in mine (along with some ice in a blender) because I get even more protein with that. It does keep me full for a while. I bought Fitmiss chocolate, and it tastes really good and wasn't expensive. Added bonus in that it satisfies my sweet tooth too!

I don't really eat a lot of meat because I find it to be a waste of calories for something I don't enjoy eating as much as some cooked veggies and whole grains. I'm all about the side dish and don't really care for the main course.

I understand the not wanting to drink your calories. I tend to be under on my calories for the day Tbh. And I think sometimes it messes with my body. Not long ago my hair was falling out. Very uncool. I wasn't starving Or anything I think I was just under nutrienced.
They say America is the number one over feed country with the highest malnurishment in the world. I can believe it.

Everything I see here is a red flag.

    Eat FOOD. Nourish your body.
Eat enough calories for your body.
Don't sweat shakes. Eat food. ENOUGH food.

I'm not starving. I eat. I'm normally only under by 200-300 calories. Not that bad.

I found Protein to be the key to my personal weight loss of 40 lbs within 4 months (5'7" F) following IIFYM fat loss mode at my ideal weight (160#) (1800 calories 40% Protein, 35% Fats, 25% Carbs). Protein shakes (whey protein isolate and or micellar casein) along with almond milk + ice in shaker bottle is my normal breakfast. Check out myprotein dot com best prices I have found plus high quality product with minimal ingrediants. You will need to introduce it slowly into your system if you are not use to it.

    your HAIR was falling out.

Ok. let's go with NOURISH yourself.

That said: I won't offer more unless you offer: height, weight, calories you're eating etc. (200-300 under...what?)
Again: it all depends on YOUR GOALS

What is the difference between whey protein isolates and micellar cadein?

That is unsweetened almond milk by the way....Most ready made protein shakes are loaded with additives so stay away from them. I highly recommend Robert Irvines Fit Crunch Bar for protein bar if that is more up your ally. If you go the IIFYM, do yourself a favor and get a food scale ....and use it.

I am 5' 7. I weigh 195. After the 45lb loss over the course of a year. Using this app I was informed to eat 1400 cal a day. I am typically low on that count by 200-300 calories. However the amount I eat is high. I don't eat white carbs, I very rarely eat meat (once a week maybe) most of what I eat is fruit and veggies and a whole grain such as millet, quinoa some type of bean or black rice. A typical day for me is 2 oranges, a large brown pear, whole wheat crackers like triskets but the cheap kind, a serving size of cashews and a cheese stick (sharp cheddar not the white ones made of plastic) that is before I get home from work then I cook dinner. Everyday it's different. Today was a blackbean and corn taco soup. Like I said I eat. I have the butt to prove I'm not starving. I don't eat a lot of protein In my diet so a shake seems like a good option for me.

Whey protein isolate is a fast release protein more suited for right after you work out.
Micellar Casein is a slow release protein more suited for before you go to bed to breakdown while you sleep.
I do a mix 50 / 50 in the morning to get the best of both.

If I had to pick one, I would go with the micellar casein because my second favorite recipe uses it I enjoy it in a faux rice pudding:
1 scoop micellar casein (25-30 grams)
    1/2 C cottage cheese
    100 grams unsweetened almond milk
    Cinnamon
    Vanilla

Mix it up, gets super thick and tastes pretty darn close to rice pudding but with tons of protein and LOW CARBS!

The app says eat 1400. so you eat 200 to 300 less....

    You eat mostly carbs.

    Try USING the app?

Try eating carbs fat and protein? Maybe a good ole 40/30/30?
    Why eat mostly carbs?

Yep to Sabine's comments. 1400 is pretty low and very low if you are going under it since you are starving yourself!!!
Figure out your ideal weight TDEE on http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/
EAT PROTEIN. Lots of IT. Protein shakes or bars should not be your only form of protein.
In order to get all the necessary aminos from protein you must eat BOTH animal and plant based protein.

Do yourself a favor and put down the carbs. Between the 2 oranges, 1 pear and a couple of triscuits you would have already blown my whole allotment of 113 grams of carbs for the day and we didnt talk about the black beans yet.

Once you get to your goal weight, then you can reduce your protein and up your carbs....slightly.

Long and the short of it:
Congrats on being 45 # down!
If you eat what you ate before you will become who you were before.
You will gain LEAN muscle by eating more protein and working out.
Muscle burns more calories than fat and also takes up less physical space, quit being afraid of it!
It will be tough for couple of weeks, but if you want it bad enough and put in the full effort, you will lose the weight.
    GOOOOOOOD LUCK!

This is the best value protein powder I can find:

    http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-protein/10530943.html

£13 for 1 kg, 80% protein - which is pretty good for whey concentrate (whey isolate has a higher %, but is more expensive)

Tastes nicer with milk, but is still drinkable when mixed with water.
