I was on Metformin but had terrible symptoms!! My DR prescribed me Januvia and I know it's a new drug but has anyone had any issues with it? Thanks!

Did you ask about extended release Metformin? Those who have issues with regular Metformin often experience less symptoms with the extended release version. Also, if you eat higher carbohydrate/higher fat foods together while taking Metformin, you are more likely to experience undesirable GI effects.

Metformin & Januvia are different classes of medications. Metformin affects your blood sugar, but does not control it. Instead, it increases cell sensitivity to the insulin you already produce.

Januvia actively controls your blood sugar, so you are more likely to experience highs and lows, depending on your meals.

I have no experience with Januvia, but if I had to choose, I would try the ER release version of Metformin first. I take Metformin for PCOS and have no issues with highs and lows, however I also eat a low carb diet. So, no GI symptoms either.

My husband was on Januvia and had gastrointestinal side effects but he doesn't have any side effects with Metformin. I'm on Metformin and it took almost 8 weeks for the gastrointestinal side effects to go away. They are finally gone!

Check out their package insert - sections 6 & 14. It sounds like you are taking it alone, so the monotherapy sections are what you need to read. It looks like a common cold was reported in the clinical trials. In section 6, you also should view postmarketing data. This is what people have voluntarily reported since being on the product. It doesn't distinguish if patients are on monotherapy or a combination of meds, but it's good to review the information. Section 14 gives more in-depth information about the clinical trials. Good luck!
