I have a step counter on my phone records for the whole day... Do I add all my steps for the whole day or only if I exercise? Thanks

MFP does not work with steps, only with calories burned.
Eating at a deficit is the key to lose body weight.
My advice is to use TDEE calorie goal . It does include the exercise already. In order to lose weight you eat your TDDE - a %. I did very well, eating at my TDEE -20%. I like that I did not have to calculate the exercise calories burned every day, it is already included.
Use a food scale, weigh everything you eat and log it.

I think the fitbit software will use the phone as a step counter. The device is called "MobileTrack." Fitbit talks to MyFitnessPal. Then your steps should get added as exercise to your diary.0
