Approaching the big 5-0!

Can't believe I'm closing in on 50! Also can't believe I'm currently wearing a size 18W. 11 months to go until 50th birthday--would love to celebrate by buying myself a whole new size 10-12 wardrobe. Seems like it's so easy to gain now, at this age, and so much harder to lose! Anyone else feeling the pain?

You can do this!! Don't let your age be an excuse, really!! Lots of peeps older then you have lost weight.

For me, when I used to say that it is harder to lose weight as I get older, the reality was it was easier for me to justify overeating and not exercise more than face the facts. Soon as I honed in on my caloric deficit and started back to regular exercise, pounds came off. The hardest part was changing my attitude and habits.

I'm 52 and hypothyroid. In the past two or three months I've lost over 15 pounds, and relatively easily. If I can do it you can, too!0

Losing weight wasn't easy for me when I was younger either. So at 60 I'm thrilled with saying goodbye to 114 lbs over the last 16 months. 35 left to go.0

I'm 46 and I honestly think it's easier to lose. I'm much more patient now than when I was young. It's easier to stick to something when you're older.0

I definitely have found it easier to gain and harder to lose. I've heard people theorize that it is our slowing metabolism that makes it harder to lose, but I have a theory that it's about tolerance. I couldn't possibly camp in a tent anymore, 5 star only. I find loud noises and even certain quiet noises (like the ticking of a clock) to be irritating. And I don't like to be hungry! I have my deficit set for .5lb/week and quickly switch to maintenance if any other conditions of human misery, over and above hungry, take hold. I'm losing steadily, and fairly painlessly. Don't let getting older stand in your way.....embrace this new stage of your life because it can certainly be a positive life enhancing new start for you.
I started out in my late 40's losing weight and getting in the best shape I had been, ever, the kids were off my hands, I certainly felt a lot wiser than I had during the earlier years of doing the whole 'latest fad diet'.....also I was damned pissed off of everyone around me saying that once you reach a certain age, hit menopause etc etc you may as well lay down and give up because weight loss and good health are either much more difficult or impossible.....that kind of challenge inspired my inner 'prove them wrong' genie.
MFP, when I found it really helped shed the last 24 kgs of the total 76 kgs I lost and the knowledge I've gained here has been invaluable in helping maintain that loss nearly 3 years. Learning about the benefits of using weights too has been eye opening and life changing, even given difficult circumstances with health.
Go out and have a ball starting your new life.

Not at all, and I lost 44 pounds 2 years ago when I was 51 or so. Eat at a calorie deficit at any age and you will lose weight.0 -
50!??! Yes gaining seems easier but my lifestyle is also less active. Don't give up. I get very frustrated but am holding in a good weight/fitness range. Dr's love it. BTW I'm 73.0

50 is just around the corner for me too. I keep saying I am going to get back on track but I only take action for a couple of days at a time. It has been a difficult year for me but it is time that I get myself in gear.0

I am 53 and I do not think it is as hard as it was in my 30's. It is a different kind of hard. I like to look on the bright side, so I will state reasons why it is easier for me now.
1. I don't have to worry about who will watch the kids while I go to the gym.
2. Health is a better motivator than appearance.
3. I know more about how to eat and exercise.
4. We have a calorie counting app like MFP
5. If the kids are home for dinner, and they don't want to eat fish and salad, they can fix their own.
6. I make the kids hide sugary or calorie dense food from me, not the other way around.
7. The kids clear and clean their own dishes so I am not tempted to clean their plates.
8. My Fitbit is very accurate at determining my TDEE
9. Toning is a myth but strength training works
10. Michelle Obama's well muscled arms are more stylish than super (thin) models stick arms.0 -
Over 50 and have found losing weight going very well. Calories in < calories out gets the job done. Age really, really, really isn't a factor.0

It has taken me nearly 3 months to lose a stone. 20 years ago I most probably could have done it in 6 weeks. However I am less willing to go hungry these days. I find that I am much better able to stick to reduced calories if I don't overdo it. I am 48.0
