Upper body exercises for a beginner

Hi all. I am looking for some advice for beginning some upper body strength training. I am in ED recovery and transitioning toward a fit and healthy lifestyle, but I don't know too much about strength training since I used to rely exclusively on cardio. I want to start a DVD program like 30DS but I can't even do a real pushup at the moment. Where should I start? Should I just start with some simple free weight exercises? Please help! Thanks for the input. :)

30DS is a great place to start! It's a short workout, and you can modify the moves and work up to full pushups, heavier weights, etc.

Start with small dumbbells, even 2 or 3lbs if needed, or do the moves without weights for starters. For pushups, you can actually do them with your hands on a step, or the edge of the coffee table, or even up against the wall. As you get stronger, move down from table to the floor, on your knees rather than toes, etc. Stick with it and you'll be amazed at how quickly you progress.

I think 30DS is a good start because of the length of the workout and the mix of moves, as well as their adaptability to modify them. As Jillian herself says (can't remember which workout she says it in, might be 30DS), just do the best you can, and go as far as you can, but keep going. Another favorite quote from her is "You have no idea how strong you are until you try."

    Go for it!

If starting with light weights, even light dumbbells, try doing Overhead Presses, Shoulder Presses, Bent over lateral raises, Bent over rows, bicep curls, bench pressing if you can, lunges, stiff-legged deadlifts, squats, etc.

If you're a beginner stick to compound lifts: bench press, shoulder press, pull ups(assisted if you need to), bent over rows
