I'm feeling really blah and don't have time to fit in a workout today to work my way out of the funk. I think I just didn't get enough sleep last night. What's your favorite food to put you in a better mood? I was thinking something rich in protein to up my energy levels and stick with me for the afternoon.

Thoughts?

Something high protein and a bit of fat may help. When I have those days I just accept that they happen every now and then and don't really try to remedy it with food. But do whatever works for you. If you eat something that gives you an energy boost and lifts your mood then that's great!

Right now I'm on a "cut back on the sugar calories kick". Avocado with a little salt and pepper right out of the skin is one of my go to snacks. If I'm wanting something warm, and snack-like, 1/2 a sweet potato with some real butter, salt and pepper.

Eating a little bit of fat with a lot less sugar seems to pick me up nicely.

If I'm going for more protein, then I can't seem to beat rotisserie chicken with the skin. I just buy the whole chicken for $6-$9, then slice off a bit each day. Again, the fats really help me out with curbing the appetite and satisfying me without the overload of sugar.

Thanks guys! I was trying to plan out my lunch to help me fight the blah. I had a turkey sandwich and spread some home made hummus on the bread instead of mayo (so yummy!) and it seems to have picked me up a bit.

Turning to food for an emotional boost can be a very slippery slope to justify poor eating habits

Lack of sleep always seems to make me dehydrated, not sure why. I always try to drink extra fluids and it helps me get through the afternoon.

Yeah I realize that. I was more trying to plan out my lunch and dinner to give me the best boost possible. Should have worded it differently.

If I'm in a bad mood I'll make something that I really like. A big bowl of warm pumpkin oats or something. Some kind of 'healthy' comfort food

My knee-jerk was bacon, but on a serious note, ancho chiles. Hatch chiles to a lesser extent. One day I was feeling inexplicably blue as I hovered over a bowl of last night's Posole with an over easy egg in it for breakfast. Sort of like chiliquiles but with hominy instead of tortilla strips. Anyway, by the time I was done, and with a little coffee, I felt almost buoyant. It was such a turnaround I had to google it. Yep, it's a thing. Capsaicin. Hope you feel better soon.

Sometimes I like to make stuff a little spicier than usual. Other times, I'll add some bell peppers just for color. I like to have meals with different colors. :)

I don't know. I don't really think food can fight a blah day, but there are things to do with food to make it less boring or plain.

Pasta in tomato sauce. When I was a kid we had spaghetti and goulash(sp?) a few times a month, so now a hot bowl of noodles always makes me feel comforted. And making the sauce yourself (or tweaking a 1/2 cup can) can really help save on the calories.

    I just like carbs, man.

I would eat whatever I planned the day before. So unless I knew in advance I was going to have a blah day, I wouldn't eat anything special because of it.

I'm with others on trying to kick things up a notch (via taste or texture) when it's an otherwise dreary day. If that doesn't work, a small piece of high-quality chocolate for dessert. Think Godiva, not Hershey's. But we're talking *one* piece, savored. When it's that good you don't need a lot. ;)

None, really, and it just depends on the day. If I'm low on energy, I tend to take a hot bath and go to bed. However, it's rare for me to be low on energy.
