It decided today to look at increasing calories in an attempt to gain weight. Has anyone any feedback or opinions on how effective the IIFYM concept is?

IIFYM is just what it says... if it fits your macros, it's fair game. It works. Barring some health issue, eating more calories than you burn will lead to weight gain. I'm a firm believer of IIFYM... it's how I fit in ice cream most days. :D

Just keep in mind that the IIFYM calculator (like many others except MFPs) already takes exercise into account. So you don't get/need to "eat back" your exercise calories. I've found that, when that difference is accounted for, the calories usually end up being pretty close.

I agree with above poster: if you eat more calories than you use, you'll gain weight; if you're maintaining (not gaining or losing) then you're eating what you burn. I like IIFYM, because it's not just about the calories but the macros ... most people would rather gain muscle than fat, and that takes bt oth a good macro balance AND proper exercise (lifting).

    Best of luck!

That calculator is not great IMO. The IIFYM website is also NOT the origin of the concept. Some guy who sells custom oatmeal simply bought the site and the facebook group. The way that calculator has you set up macros is flawed for a few reasons. First of all, it makes most people eat too much protein, especially overweight folks. Second, it encourages hitting all three macro targets each day. It's far more flexible to not have a carb target and just hit protein and fat minimums using remaining calories on any macro nutrient you want. I explain the whole process in this series of videos:
