Whatever you get, if you're going to be making big batches of things and portioning them out, I'd highly recommend getting one with an 11 pound capacity.

My first scale had a 5 pound capacity and it ended up being a pain. Simply putting the blender jar on it and making a smoothie made the readings dodgy because it was so heavy relative to its capacity.

Is 11 pound capacity enough for casseroles and such?

Yup! Casseroles and pots of soup and the like are why I recommend it!

Do you weigh the whole thing at once?

I would have thought you would weigh the portion you plan to eat.

Or do people eat 10lb of casseroles?

I just got a generic digital scale from Coles.

Seems to do everything I would want it to do.
When you use the recipe builder, you weigh the entire dish so you know what a portion is or 1g when you're serving your portion.

Well i got a scale with a tare button on it. Its funny my husband had heard me say I wanted one and he picked it up at our local post office. Its awesome. Has the tare, huge numbers (needed that) not sure of the capacity but seems i read somewhere it was 6 lbs. Thanks for all the great suggestions. You are all very helpful and I'm very grateful. Used mine last night. I see why the tare function is so important. Zeroed it after putting my little container on it and its very accurate. No more little plastic one with a pointer that was a bit of a guessing game. We live in the middle of nowhere and no Target or Bed Bath and Beyond are anywhere around. I have to order everything online. Thanks again everyone!

That is Great! What a nice husband.
