Herbal coffee substitutes exist. I used to drink teeccino... it kinda tasted like coffee but I can't really remember. I don't think it's supposed to have any sort of stimulating effect though, but just gives you something nice and warm to drink when you would usually have a cuppa.

I'm back to drinking real coffee now.

I love several varieties of Teeccino. I make half coffee and half Teeccino. I didn't like the way I felt with straight coffee.

There are sample packs from their website so people can try different flavors. http://teeccino.com/category/30/Teeccino-Samplers.html

After I picked flavors, I bought them from my food coop, where it's cheaper and no shipping charges. You can also get Teeccino at some supermarkets, Whole Foods, and Amazon. Sadly, my favorite flavor is Chocolate Raspberry and last I looked that was only available http://teeccino.com/product/270/Chocolate-Raspberry-11-oz-Bag.html

Do you like the taste of teeccino? Does it taste similar to coffee or totally different taste?

@kshama2001 I see they make teeccino in tea bag form or you can buy them in ground form. Which one did you like better?

I have ADD so coffee , even though it is a stimulant, has a "calm-down" effect for me.I have a cup at work when I am feeling a bit unfocused. I also drink coffee right before I go to bed to help me sleep.

wow. I don't have ADD (that I know of, but coffee has the exact same effect on me including helping me sleep) Although I am slightly on the obsessive/compulsive side leaning heavily to the obsessive. Good to know.

I use ground form. I imagine it's cheaper because of less packaging. I just brew it in the coffeepot with half coffee. You could also brew it in the coffee maker with all Teeccino.

I give it up once a year for a month to remind myself that nothing controls me... then I happily let it control me for the other 11 months of the year

    Give up coffee?

Just try to pry it out of my hands.

Exactly! The world wouldn't be a better place if I gave up coffee - for me OR anybody around me! :)

The downside of caffeine is that it increases the cortisol levels in your blood.

I suspected that was the cause of my side effects, but had lab test done and mine was at a normal level.

Many things can increase cortisol. If someone's cortisol is already elevated then I imagine drinking caffeine could cause some issues.

Too much caffeine brings on migraines for me the doctor states yet my dr has prescribed a medication that states to drink with caffeine to be most effective.... Ya I have no clue what the real answer for caffeine is in regards to health lol the "scientific" answers are all over the place. So yep I'm drinking my Coke Zero anyway

Ha! Yes. It was definitely controlling me. I zombie walked to the kitchen for it as soon as I opened my eyes in the morning and was the grumpiest brat if I didn't get it. Just had to cut it out. Now it's an awesome super boosting treat because my tolerance is so low.

I gave up coffee once for two-and-a-half years. It helped me quit smoking - that whole "coffee and a smoke" combo was impossible to break unless both were gone. I thought I could live without both the rest of my life.

Then I came to my senses and started drinking coffee again.

Still smoke free, though. 4 years in November.

So, I gave up my several cups of coffee a day habit two months ago... but I'm having a hard time kicking caffeine all together. Not sure if it's just a mental thing but I still "need" my tea in the morning and sometimes another tea later in the day.

I know that caffeine isn't "bad" but I'd love to hear some suggestions for alternatives. I'm about to start training for long distance running again and I would love a non-coffee/Redbull/stimulate energy boost if such a thing exists.

Why are you giving up caffeine?

I saw your answer above after I asked the question. If you have a reaction to it, it probably benefits you to give it up. There really is decaf coffee, which I drink because caffeine does not do well with my GERD.

Trying to function in the morning without coffee increases my cortisol levels even more. And those of everyone around me. I'll take my chances.
