Bit migrainey this week so falling behind a little. Need to blast it this weekend to catch up. For someone who hates exercise you are all getting me excited about one day being able to post 5miles as though it was nothing.0

You run a 5K at 7:30 and the 10K at 8:45. Skip wanted to do both (5K for time and 10K for fun with me), but they only had 1 slot left in the 10K she so kindly offered to let me have it ha ha! I did email the race director begging for a slot for her so hopefully I can get one for her.
Hope Skip gets her slot - but you got this (5K, then 10K)! A less-fat but still-old man I know did that last weekend, and had a great time!
Yeah, I did this at Cotton Row on Memorial Day this year.
I raced the 10K then paced my wife during the 5K. I was signed up for the 10K and did the 5K as a bandit but then turned off just before crossing the finish line. I also took the timing chip off my bib just in case.
I thought that was actually the better way to run it, 10K first and then 5K after, but okay.
Thanks @karef you are so kind. She really is a good kid, but I also think she wanted to sit out the 10K. She has no faith in herself in anything over 8K. I'm working on that though. I wish you daughter liked to run too, it's nice to have something in common.0 -

Does anyone else notice a difference in pace when running in the dark? I always am slower with the headlamp. I think I change my stride a bit because I am more focused on the area directly in front of me. I also think it alters my overall posture.
Heck yes. When I do tempo runs in the dark, I average 20-30 seconds per mile slower than if I do them in daylight. I'm way more cautious running in the dark, so my speed takes a serious beating. But it's worth it not to be tripping on cracks in the sidewalk or stepping in pot holes!
To avoid cracks in sidewalks I run in the street as much as possible.
I utilize side roads that are not very busy 5:30-6:00 AM.
Our group designs routes the same way. My Thursday group runs through Research Park, so most of the routes are designed through all of the corporate parking lots to avoid traffic on the street.
But sidwalks are dangerous to runners. So much we run in the street next to traffic. LOL

so on my long run on Saturday...my fat went numb. I had layers, and I was actually pretty warm. It was mid-30's. My belly, back of my arms and hip fats all went numb. What might be the best way to avoid this?
Usually when something goes numb it has to do with poor bloodflow? Were you wearing something that was super tight and cutoff your circulation? Maybe dehydration too can cause poor circulation?
no, nothing tight and I would like to think I wasn't dehydrated. @taeliesyn mentioned that fat is not great at circulation and "climate control." I will wear my windproof jacket this saturday and see if that helps. Otherwise, off to the doctor.
Thanks for the tag @rogue024 and the help @Stoshew71
I run on the sidewalk most because the roads I run on are busy even at 4am with buses, cops and other city traffic. I prefer to run in areas that are well-lit and some corners even have cameras. there is about a third that I run in the road because I can't see the sidewalk.0 -

:-)
I remember the first time I did 6 miles on the greenway. I did 3 miles first and rested for 15 minutes.
I then did my second 3 miles after the rest but noticed all my muscles got all tightened up after the break in between. I said, I will never do that again.
The next time I did 6 miles on the greenway, I did it nonstop. Was way easier because my muscles didn't tighten up until after I got done. LOL That was almost 2 years ago.

Growing up I ran but as a means for something else. Football and wrestling practice we had to run a lot and hated every bit of it. You did something wrong, your punishment was to run a lap.
After college, I kind of was a slug. Did some pickup basketball games during lunch at work or the beer softball leagues every year. But yeah, only got into the running thing as a thing of itself only 2 years ago. never did as much running as I do now ever. If only I got into it sooner. LOL0 -

40:30. Don't laugh, I only started running on Sept 22, and I'm 48.
It was a lovely morning for a run, too!Misty Lake by Orphia Nay, on Flickr
What a beautiful picture. My 5k time is going to be slightly longer than yours. I am on Week 8 Day 1 of C25K and I was kind of bummed when I realized that there's no way I will be able to do it in under 40 minutes.
But then I started thinking about the fact that I am doing this for me. I don't have to run. I don't plan to ever compete. I just want to be able to complete the program and go through with the Turkey Trot.
As a matter of fact, today's 28 min. run was so brutal that it felt like I was running with those tiny conditioning parachutes that pro athletes use to give them extra resistance...only I was trying as hard as I could, lol. Aaaaaaaand I still sucked.
But it is still way better than sitting on the couch, or in front of the computer thinking about working out, right?
Wow, you're on Week 8? That's great!
Hell, yes, it's better than doing nothing! Way, way, way better!
Don't worry about my time. I'm probably taller than you, and we're all competing against ourselves first and foremost.
Lovely to meet another C25Ker!0 -

@aarar Wow, -18C?! That's super chilly. Now the "below 0C" they predicted for this weekend here don't sounds so spectacular anymore.
@skippygirlsmom I feel with you - it's really aweful when you are stuck with a cough like that - it always seems to me like it takes forever to get better. Hope you'll be fine soon. Super-cool that Skip got a slot in in 5+10 together with you!

Yesterday evening I ran with my hubby. He impresses me. Yes, he's slow, but he doesn't regularly run. He decided he wants to do a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving with me, so he has been running to prepare. He can literally go from couch to 5K in a day. He pretty much does this anytime he wants to do a race...the two week training plan. I told him to imagine what he could do if he just stuck with it!
Ha-ha! My husband is the same way... Forget training, He just up and runs. We have a half coming up in March, he won't train at all. I've already started a training program, checked the course elevation, ordering clothes to train in the cold, and put plans in my training journal 4 months out.
Wait until their wives are faster than they are and maybe they'll start training. I'm about 7 minutes behind him on the 10k0 -

Swim Lessons tonight so no run. Tomorrow night Curling Club Friday night mixed league mixxer. So hopefully I will get out on Saturday (Long Run) and Sunday (Short Run). I need to take up one more sport/volunteer action as my Monday has nothing planned on a long term continuous basis.
@beachhouse758 - @shanaber said it perfectly. Especially the comment about " I ran one race and had so much fun that I have now run many ". That's exactly how I felt after my first race. There is something magical/addictive about coming around the corner into the home stretch and hearing your co-runners who have already finished screaming your name and cheering you to the line. Doesn't matter what your time / placement is just go out and have fun( and cheer on your fellow runners).
@skippygirlsmom Glad to hear that skip has a spot in the race, Cheers to the Race Director(s).
Hope your cough clears up. I usually get the dry cough that ends up causing me to strain the diaphragm muscles where they connect to the rib cage.
@kareF Glad to see you are able to get some low stress walks in and keeping such a positive attitude. Ultimately its just a small delay in getting to your goals.0 -

@9voice9 - you are definitely less fat but you are NOT old!
@kareF - we are having summer like weather here too. it was in the mid 80s today. I personally am looking forward to it being cooler again!
Heading to San Diego tomorrow. No running just walking around the expo and hanging out with my husband. I convinced him to to come with me and keep hoping running will rub off on him tooI don't think there is any chance but there is still hope!

LOL, you lost your mind. Hope Skip gets a spot! What's one more tiny runner?
I'm doing a bike ride with some people from my group on Thanksgiving morning - around 50 miles I think. Then I might 1 run mile too! First Thanksgiving I haven't cooked in about 25 years. My son and his fiance are hosting!
@ddmom0811 I figured if I run both just to run and don't worry about time and enjoy it I'll be okay. Skip said you can always wimp out at the last minute! I just want the challenge mug. I'm not sure how long I'll be in FL, if we hang around I'll let you know. Thought about checking if you were running, but even if we both drove half way it would be a way early day to get a race in between. I have to watch where I post stuff because my mom doesn't know we are coming down for the week. We want to surprise her. [/quote]
What a nice surprise! Enjoy! Yes, let me know if you all come to Orlando!
