ration out halloween candy?! It's HALLOWEEN! It only happens once a year, and they're only little kids trick or treating once! I can't imagine coming home after a fun night running around in costumes, them dumping their candy in a pile and then me saying "ok now just pick one or two and go to bed!" should I not let them open all their presents on xmas morning either?!
I know, right? My parents let me have one piece per day for about 3 days. I have no clue whatever happened to the rest but I know I never got it!
My kids' candy gets put in a bowl on top of the fridge and after lunch and dinner, they can have some. I let them eat plenty Halloween night. We don't ever really buy candy (well, there's usually twizzlers in the pantry) and I've stopped baking as much as I used to, so the holidays are really for them.0 -
Seriously. You are not required to have it around. Toss it.0

When you go to a party with an open bar, do you always get falling down drunk?
When you see a very attractive member of the opposite gender, do you always make inappropriate moves on that person?
When someone disagrees with you, do you violently oppose them, even if you want to?
Do you get up and go to work every day even though you really don't like your job?
When an office superior says something stupid, do you immediately and loudly correct that person?
OK. Will power ain't the problem. We can, and do, control many, many impulses. If you want to lose weight, you must control your caloric intake. ONLY EAT THE CANDY THAT YOU WILL FIT INTO YOUR CALORIC BUDGET!
Act like a responsible adult, you do on the rest of lifes decisions. This is one you have made.

I personally ate a little less throughout the week for Saturday. I already keep candy with my snacks, so I'm good with that.0 -
Pretend each piece is poisonous.

I had two pieces today... from a couple bags I bought for myself a few weeks ago. I can have it anytime and don't need to steal my kids' candy that way.0

Candy is not a rare item. You are going to face this at Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, etc too.
Put it out of sight in a cabinet or something.
Divide up the candy. Only eat the candy in your own bag/container. This is how my family handles candy and cookies to make sure everyone gets their fair share. You can eat it all at one or have it for longer. Maybe make it a contest in your family to see who has their candy the longest.
Eat one or two pieces a day and log it. Log it before you eat it and decide if it is worth the calories for the amount of satisfaction/fullness of your day.

Put a couple pieces in Greek yogurt or your nightly treat. They are more satisfy and go a longer way when you don't finish it in .5 seconds.0

Start the "Candy Fairy" or "Switch Witch" tradition. Basically, they get to keep a sandwich bag of their favorites and the rest of it goes into a bag they leave just inside the front door. When they wake up on Nov 1st it's gone and they find a toy (or whatever they like) in its place.0

This is so very accurate--we so often act like we have no self-control when it comes to food but are able to use self-control in so many other life situations.
While it is true that we all have willpower and self-control to stop ourselves from doing lots of things, research has also shown that willpower is, in many ways, quite similar to muscle work in that we have a) limited stores of it b) how large those stores are at any given time depends on a whole heap of factors (including whether we have had to use some of it recently) and c) that we can train ourselves to increase those stores.
This is why it's harder to work up willpower to say no to unhealthy foods if we're already stressed or having a bad day etc.
We can and do run out of willpower, so sometimes we have to prioritise where we spend our willpower and/or find ways in which to decrease the demand on our willpower. So it's perfectly reasonable to be looking strategies to help reduce the temptation so that you don't drain your reserves.

It's pretty simple for me -- I just don't have much of any candy in the house. I have some mints, chewy ginger candy, hard fruity candies, and a two pound dark chocolate bar that's in the freezer currently. I can't eat what isn't there!
Plus, even if I did have snickers and skittles sitting around the house, a look at the ingredients list is usually motivating enough for me to resist them.0 -

Candy isn't just a Halloween or even Halloween/Christmas/Valentine/Easter thing where I live. Kid finishes work at school, gets a piece of candy from the teacher. Gets off the bus, candy from bus driver. Goes to bank, candy from teller. Gets a hair cut, candy from stylist. My daughter is probably offered candy 5 times a week. It's not a special treat at all. She usually brings it home, sets it on the counter, and two days later I throw it out. She doesn't miss it. Same on Halloween. The candy is not the big draw for trick or treating, wearing a costume is what makes the day special for her.0 -
After we go trick or treating, I pick out most of the candy and leave it in bowl outside for the "older kids"
Then I leave some (very few) for my kids to eat -- after a couple of days, my kids forget about it. If there's anything left, I can hide it in the pantry (somewhere high, out of MY reach, lol) or freeze it.0
