I started my journey in May at 272lbs. By August 29th I weighed in at 239 and was feeling really good. I can't even explain what happened to me but as soon as I saw that 239 I started slacking off. Being in the 230s thrilled me but for some reason my motivation went out the window. Why would I do this to myself? I finally got a handle on things two weeks ago and weighed back in at 256. What a disappointment. Today I am back down to 250.1 and can't wait to keep up my progress. I know dwelling on where I was won't help me get back there but I don't understand how I can lose motivation when I hit major positive goals. I guess I am wondering if anyone has been through anything similar?

Unfortunately, this is very common. Read through the treads here on this topic. The GOOD thing is you recognize the behavior and want to take steps to change it. You can do it!
When you get to a point where you think you'll begin slacking stop yourself, re-evaluate, and save what you wrote in your OP. Read it. At that point, don't start looking for motivation. Just keep continuing on your planned path. Accept right off the bat that this is a long-term lifestyle change and you simply aren't going to feel motivated every day. Doesn't matter. Just stay on plan and after a while you can look back and see that continuing forward has paid off substantially.
Removing emotions from food is important, but so is removing emotions from our healthy choices overall. You have path A and path B. Choose the best based on facts. Evaluating each based on how you feel about them will only derail you.0
